Is the PlaceID for a place always persistent?

PlaceIDs are designed to be persistent over time, but there are certain scenarios where a PlaceID may change to maintain data accuracy and integrity. PlaceID might be updated for the following reasons:
  • Business closure and reopening as a different entity: When a business closes and a new, unrelated business opens at the same location, the PlaceID is updated to reflect the change in identity.
  • Major change in nature or category of business: If a business undergoes a substantial transformation. Example: Changing from a restaurant to a retail store -the PlaceID may change to reflect the new business type.
  • Merging or splitting of businesses: When two businesses merge into one, or a single business splits into multiple entities, new PlaceIDs may be assigned to represent the new structure.
  • Rebranding or legal entity change: Significant changes in ownership, branding, or legal structure can lead to a new PlaceID if the underlying entity is considered as different.
  • Geospatial correction or reassignment: If the location data is corrected, such as updates to address coordinates or relocation of the POI, then PlaceID may be updated to reflect the corrected geospatial information.
  • Data quality or source updates: Enhancements in source data, such as changes in business registration details, classification, or authoritative source updates, can also lead to PlaceID changes.
