If you plan to use the TSS 17 Salesforce Driver on Windows 10 or Windows Server 2012 R2 platforms, there are additional steps necessary to configure your environment, including setting the TSS 17 Salesforce Driver to operate in Server Mode rather than Direct Mode (the default), creating the Salesforce SQL engine Windows Service, setting environment variables, and installing Java Virtual Machine (JVM) Oracle JDK 7 or higher (LTS version), OpenJDK 8 or higher (LTS version), or IBM SDK (Java) 7 or higher (LTS version).
