After you have loaded data into a data source and applied all of your compliance checks, you can copy this information, including business rules, to a new, dynamic data source.

If you plan to copy metadata from more than one data source that includes joins, you may get undesired results. As a best practice to avoid generating unnecessary joins, group the data sources into a Baseline Analysis project (currently available in the Control Center only) and copy the metadata for the entire project.

Table 1. Example Scenarios:

Scenario

Permanent Joins

Data Sources in Repository

Joins owned by Data Sources

1. Assume that you have two data sources named A and B and a permanent join on A and B. A-B

A

B

A owns A-B

B owns A-B

2. Next, assume that you copy metadata from data source A (including all permanent joins) to data source X and import data into X.

A-B

X-B

A

B

X

A owns A-B

B owns A-B and X-B

X owns X-B

3. Next, assume that you copy metadata from data source B (including all permanent joins) to data source Z and import data into Z.

A-B

A-Z

X-B

X-Z

A

Z

A owns A-B and A-Z

B owns A-B and X-B

X owns X-B and X-Z

Z owns A-Z and X-Z

Note: Most likely the join between X and Z is the one that is most appropriate, but the joins X-B and A-Z resulting from this process are a mixture of old and new data sources.

To copy metadata to a new data source

Note: The Copy Metadata button is unavailable when no data source or more than one data sources are selected.
  1. On the navigation menu under Data Discovery, click View Data Sources. The data sources available in the repository are displayed.
  2. Select the data source that has the desired metadata (including business rules).
  3. Select the Copy Metadata button. Use the following table to decide which option to select:

    Choose...

    To Copy...

    Self Joins

    Only permanent self joins.

    All Joins

    All permanent joins.

    No Join

    No joins.

A new data source is created with the same name and a different data source ID. The icon next to the data source name indicates that this is a dynamic data source and does not contain data, only metadata.

  4. (Optional) Add data to the empty data source.
