To insulate "production-ready" data from updates that may be incomplete or invalid, EnterWorks supports the creation of separate Staging and Production versions of the data. Records are stored in the Staging and Production repositories depending on their readiness for use.

The Staging repository holds records that are in the process of being populated, updated, or validated.

The Production repository holds records approved for use for generating publications or for creating and scheduling exports for syndications.

Some organizations also have a temporary Pre-staging repository for records that are not yet ready for Staging. Pre-staging is typically used for imported data that needs processing or validation before it is ready for Staging.

After a record in a Staging repository has been deemed valid (see Record Validation ), it is copied to the Production repository, where it overwrites any previous copy of the record. This act is called promotion. EnterWorks can be configured to automatically promote records when they are valid for the next repository, or the system can be configured to require promotion to be triggered by a process or user. When records are promoted, they are not deleted from Staging. Only new records and records that have been modified since the last time records were promoted are promoted.

Data that is added or updated in repositories that are not configured for Staging and Production will be "production-ready" when the records are saved.
