The Precisely Base Demographics dataset for New Zealand is derived from the Stats NZ data released because of the 2023 New Zealand Census (https://www.stats.govt.nz/2023-census/). Based on more than 25 years of experience with census data, Precisely has created a core dataset containing more than 250 variables and derived values. This dataset helps users gain insights into demographic factors relevant to their activities. These variables have been chosen specifically to reflect relevant characteristics of the population and are in line with similar Precisely datasets in other geographies around the World. For detailed information on the collection, processing, interpretation, and use of 2023 Census data, see 2023 Census data user guide.

The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings is the official count of people and dwellings in the country. New Zealand's 2023 Census of Population and Dwellings was held on 7 March 2023. By asking everyone to complete a set of questions about themselves and their household, a snapshot of who is living in, and visiting, New Zealand is generated. The census is the only survey in New Zealand that covers the entire population, offering the most comprehensive view of life across cities, towns, suburbs, and rural areas. The census aims to count everyone present in New Zealand on census night, including:
  • People on New Zealand soil
  • People on a vessel in New Zealand waters
  • People in transit between New Zealand ports
  • Overseas residents in New Zealand
  • Overseas visitors in New Zealand
  • People in diplomatic residences including housekeeping staff, uniformed military personnel, and members of diplomats' families
  • Overseas military personnel and their families located in New Zealand on census night (including military personnel in New Zealand's territorial waters).
  • Note: New Zealand residents who are outside the country on census night are not included in the census.
