The GroundView: US Business Summary database contains aggregations of business establishments and employment information for all standard Census-based geographic levels, as well as ZIP Codes and Designated Market Area Regions (DMARs). The primary source of this data is Precisely's World Points of Interest-Premium dataset. This product is a national dataset of business locations, leisure hot spots, and geographic features. Business establishments are extracted from this data source along with a variety of attributes and business-specific information, such as NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes, SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) codes, descriptions, employee count information, and location context information – for approximately 17 million US businesses.
Key methodology steps include:
- Address geocoding each business in the US Points of Interest - Premium file to its Census Block Group.
- Aggregating the number of establishments and employees by their corresponding NAICS and SIC codes.
