The Daytime Population (Australia) dataset estimates the number of people who work, live or visit a Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1). An SA1 is a region that is comprised of approximately 400 persons or 150 households on average and is the smallest geography for which the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides detailed demographic information.
Total Daytime Population is a daily figure that include visitors from other regions and countries and is used as an average of the entire year’s traffic. It is designed to quantify the number of potential customers who would be present in an area during the region’s business hours. While the title of the dataset is Daytime Population, the numbers also show the potential patrons of bars, restaurants, cinemas, clubs and other businesses whose main trading hours do not fall within 9 AM - 5 PM.
Daytime Population (Australia) is produced yearly. The dataset is not designed to capture those people who are present in an area solely to pick up their children from school or who pass through the area on their way to / from work. In addition, it is not designed to measure the peaks and troughs of the seasonal activity.
