A hierarchy text file is included for each country with multiple administrative levels. This file relates lower-order admin areas to associated higher-order areas with a separate record for each unique lower-order area name.
The hierarchy file contains the fields listed below for administrative levels 1 through 6, in ascending order, starting with the smallest administrative level for that country and working up to the largest level (country). The pound character (#) represents the actual administrative level number.

- level#_name
Each field contains the following information for each administrative level:
level#_id – Administrative level ID (example: 1000011808583788906550309)
level#_code – Administrative level code (example: NY06550309)
level#_name – Administrative level name (example: New Hartford)
The following example shows an entry from the United States hierarchy file. The smallest administrative level in the US is Level 5, Census Designated Place (CDP). The progression of administrative levels for the US is CDP > Minor Civil Division (MCD) > County > State >Country.
