You can choose to abbreviate labels when they do not fit on the map using a column of short text in the layer table. You will need to know the column name before you begin.

To use an abbreviation when a label name does not fit:

  1. Select the layer name in the Explorer window.
  2. On the LABELS tab, in the Label Content group, from the Abbreviate with drop-down list, select the column name that contains the abbreviations you want to use.

The map refreshes with this change.

You set this in the Layer Properties dialog box:

  1. Double-click the layer name in the Explorer window to open the Layer Properties dialog box.
  2. On the Label Display tab, select the Allow abbreviated labels check box.

This option is also available on the LABELS tab in the Label Content group by selecting a column from the Abbreviate with drop-down list.

  3. Select the Allow abbreviated labels check box and then select the table field (column) that contains the abbreviations from the drop-down list. Abbreviations must be shorter than the labels selected for Label with, otherwise they will not be drawn.
  4. Click OK to save the changes.
