When you press and hold the Ctrl key while using the Select command, it selects the next selectable object beneath the current object. When you have several objects overlapped in the same layer, it selects the next object down. When there are no more objects left in the current layer, MapInfo Pro starts selecting objects from the next selectable layer down.

For example, imagine you have three objects overlapped in the same place in a layer. Let us call them Three, Two, and One (moving from the top down). MapInfo Pro selects Three if you have not pressed Ctrl. If you press the Ctrl key, MapInfo Pro selects Two on the first mouse click and One on the second click.

When this is the only selectable layer, MapInfo Pro cycles back to the beginning (Three) on the third click. When, however. There is another selectable layer, MapInfo Pro moves to that layer on the third click.

When selecting a point object, you generally want to position the Select command in the center of the symbol. However, some symbols have a hot spot that you must hit in order to select it. For example, the hot spot on the golf flag symbol is the base of the pole.
