You can send your MapInfo Pro image to the printer as an Enhanced Metafile (EMF). MapInfo Pro generates an Enhanced Metafile from the print contents, which is then sent to the printer. This method produces good quality output while reducing printing time and spool sizes, but your printer must be able to handle the metafile.

Printing directly to a printer device does not support translucent images. If your map or layout contains a translucent image, then you must print as an Enhanced Metafile (EMF).

Printing to a PDF device as an Enhanced Metafile (EMF) creates a flat, non-layered, PDF file.

Note: Exporting to EMF/WMF is different than the printer option for Print Using EMF. Exporting produces EMF/WMF files. The print option for using EMF happens to use a metafile temporarily while printing.

To print an Enhanced Metafile (EMF):

  1. From the HOME tab, in the Output group, click Print.
  2. In the Print dialog box, click Advanced.
  3. In the Advanced dialog box, select Print using Enhanced Metafile (EMF) and then click OK.
Note: If you are printing a map or layout that contains a translucent image, you must select Print Using Enhancement Metafile (EMF). The Print Directly to Device option does not support translucent images.
  4. Clear the Print to File check box, so that it is not selected.
  5. Click OK.

If the Print to File dialog box displays, then you have chosen a printer that is a file writer, such as the Microsoft XPS Document Writer or the MapInfo PDF Printer. Type the name of the file you want to create in the field provided and click OK.
