You can select to store the bounds and coordinate systems of the map or layout view in your PDF file. This type of file is called a Georegistered PDF.

To print a map or a layout to a Georegistered PDF:

  1. On the HOME tab, in the Output group, click Print or Create to open the Print dialog box.
  2. Click PDF.

The MapInfo PDF Printer is already selected for you in the Name list. MapInfo Pro installs with this PDF driver.

  3. In the PDF Preferences dialog box:
    1. Select the Georegistered PDF check box. To view Georegistration coordinate units, you must have Georegistered PDF turned on before generating the PDF file.
    2. Select either Use Map Units or Use Degrees options. For a description of these options, see Saving Preferences for Georegistration Coordinate Units.
    3. Click OK.

You only need to set these once, because these settings persist until you change them.

  4. In the Print dialog box, click OK to print to a Georegistered PDF file.

About the Georegistered PDF

  • Geographic locations of map windows are stored in the PDF file.
  • Georegistration is independent of the Layered PDF setting and work for layered or non-layered PDF files.

Viewing a Georegistered PDF

To view Georegistration information in Adobe Acrobat, click Tools, Analysis, and Geospatial Location Tool. When using the Geospatial Location Tool, moving the mouse around the map shows the current position.

You must have Georegistered PDF turned on in MapInfo Pro before generating the PDF file to see Georegistration information.

To adjust the display in Acrobat, click Edit, Preferences, and then in the Categories list select Measuring (Geo). If the PDF was created from a Longitude\Latitude Map window or a map within a Layout window, then check the Primary Display check box and select Longitude\Latitude from the list. For other projected coordinate systems, select Northing, Easting from the list.

Note: Georegistered PDF support is available with Adobe Reader/Acrobat 9.0 or later. No other Geospatial plugin is supported. Adobe Acrobat Reader X no longer supports Geospatial information display in the Northing/Easting panel, MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) panel, and USNG (United States National Grid) panel. The location in degrees displays only in the Longitude/Latitude panel. To see the location value conversions in Northing/Easting, MGRS, or USNG, use Adobe Acrobat versions prior to Adobe Acrobat X.

Saving Preferences for Georegistration Coordinate Units

You can select to store the bounds and coordinate systems of the map or layout in your PDF file. This type of file is called a Georegistered PDF. You can save preferences to set the georegistration coordinate units to either Use Map Units or Use Degrees.

Use Map Units sets the Georegistration points to the coordinate units in which the map data is displayed, such as meters, yards, survey feet, or degrees. Select this option when you want to display the Northing/Easting values in the current map units using Acrobat Reader-if map units are in feet then Northing/Easting values display in feet and if map units are in meters then Northing/Easting values be display in meters.

Note: When using Use Map Units, if the map units are something other than meters (such as feet, survey feet or yards), then the Longitude/ Latitude values in Adobe Acrobat's location display may be incorrect. However, the Northing/Easting values will be correct.

Use Degrees sets the Georegistration points in degrees irrespective of the current map units. Select this option when the current map data displays in map units other than meters or degrees (such as feet, survey feet or yards). The Northing/Easting values display in meters irrespective of the current map unit-if the location readings for a point in MapInfo Pro is:

Northing: 10000 feet and Easting 10000 feet

then in Acrobat the values will be:

Northing: 3048 meter and Easting 3048 meter

To save coordinate unit preferences for Georegistered PDFs, you must print to a Georegistered PDF, see Printing a Georegistered PDF.

Acrobat Reader X and higher does not display advanced Geospatial information in the PDF in the Northing/Easting panel, MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) panel, and USNG (United States National Grid) panel. Instead, you will only see the location in degrees in the Longitude/Latitude panel.

Known Issue

MapInfo PDF Printer driver does not support the GeoRegistration or PDF Attribute data export along with PDF security options or encryption.

The GeoRegistration or PDF Attribute exporting support has been validated with the following MapInfo PDF Printer configuration in the Destination tab:

  • Preview document before proceeding and Prompt for destination options should be unchecked.
  • File system should be selected as destination. On the File System Options tab, the following fields should be set:
    • Destination File should be selected to Prompt for file name.
    • Default directory should be left blank.
    • Default Filename should be left blank.
    • Overwrite option should be selected as anything but Append to Existing file.
    • Print to should be set as Do not Print.

If the above configuration settings are not made, then printing a GeoRegistered PDF or exporting PDF data may generate an error message, An unknown error occurred while exporting Geographic/Attribute data to PDF.
