You can use the Set Clip Region command to isolate a region of a map for display and/or printing. The clipped region may be a pre-defined map region, such as a state, or you can use a drawing command to define a region. Use the Select command to select a pre-defined region or a region that you defined. Thematic maps and seamless layers, labels, and points displayed on the map will be included in the clipped region.

To clip a region of a map:

  1. Use the Select command to select the region of the map you want to clip. Only one region can be selected. If you select another clip region, you will be prompted to replace or retain the current clipped region.
  2. On the SPATIAL tab, in the Edit group, click Clip Region, and Set Clip Region.

The map redraws to display the clipped region.

To redisplay the entire map, on the SPATIAL tab, in the Edit group, click Clip Region, and Clip Region On/Off.

To toggle between the map and the clipped region, you may find it useful to use the Clip Region On/Off command.

Note: To clip a raster image, use an object created in the cosmetic layer, or an object from an existing vector layer.

Saving a Clipped Region of a Map

To save a clipped region of a map:

  1. On the HOME tab, in the Windows group, click Tool Windows, and click Layers from the list, to open the Layers window. Click the Editable icon beside the Cosmetic Layer to turn On editing.
  2. Use a drawing command to draw the map clipping object: on the SPATIAL tab, in the Create group, click a drawing command from the list.
  3. Select the object you just added to the map. On the MAP tab, in the Selection group, click Select, and Select.
  4. On the SPATIAL tab, in the Edit group, click Clip Region, and Set Clip Region.

The map redraws showing only the clipping object and the following prompt displays:

Retain the object used for clipping in the Cosmetic Layer

  5. Select OK to leave the map clipping object in the Cosmetic Layer.
  6. To view the map region associated with the map clipping object, on the SPATIAL tab, in the Create group, on the Style list, click Region Style. From the Pattern drop-down list, select N (none). The layers that comprise the clipped region display.

Setting Clip Region Options On-the-Fly

You can set options on-the-fly, which override the default options and only effect the current active Map window.

To set clip region options on-the-fly:

  1. On the PRO tab, click Options, and Map Window to open the Map Options dialog box.
  2. Check one of the three options under Apply Clip Region Using:
    • Window Device Clipping (all objects) - The Windows Device Display (screen or printer) provides the clip region functionality. All objects (including points, labels, text, rasters, and grids) will be clipped at the Clip Region boundary. This is the default mode.
    • Window Device Clipping (no points, text) - The Windows Device Display provides the Clip Region functionality. All objects are using Windows Device Clipping except points and labels. Points and labels will be completely displayed only if the point or label point lies inside the Clip Region object. Text objects, rasters, and grids are always displayed and never clipped.
    • Erase Outside (no points, text) - This option uses the MapInfo Pro Erase Outside Target functionality to produce the clipping. The Clip Region object is the Cutter object, and all other objects are Target objects for this operation. All objects are clipped using Erase Outside Target, except points and labels. In addition, points and labels will be completely displayed only if the point or label point lies inside the Clip Region object. Text objects, raster, and Grids are always displayed and never clipped with this method.
  3. Click OK to have the specified clip region settings applied to you current active Map window.
