You can add individual point symbols to represent any feature on your map.

To add point symbols to your map:

  1. Make the layer that you want to work with editable. On the HOME tab, in the Windows group, click Tool Windows, and click Layers from the list, to open the Layers window.

You can also see map layers in the Explorer window.

Click the Editable icon beside the layer name to turn On editing.

Click the Selectable icon beside the layer name to turn On selection.

  2. On the SPATIAL tab, in the Create group, click Insert, and Symbol.
  3. Click on the map where you want to place the point symbol.

The point symbol appears at that location.

Specifying Symbol Styles of Point Objects

Use the Symbol Style command to set the symbol type, size, and color of symbols for point objects that you create. You can also change the attributes of existing symbols. MapInfo Pro supports three types of symbols: vector symbols, installed font symbols, and custom symbols.

  • Vector symbols – The 36 shapes from the MapInfo Pro symbol set.
  • Installed font symbols – Symbols available from the installed fonts that offer a symbol set.
  • Custom symbols – Symbols found in bitmap format in the CUSTSYMB directory where MapInfo Pro is installed. The symbols must reside in an editable layer or in the Layout window in order to change their attributes.

The Symbol Style command applies only to symbols. To change the attributes of other types of objects, use the Region Style, Line Style, and Text Style commands.

To specify symbol styles for new point objects:

  1. Make the layer that you want to work with editable.
  2. On the SPATIAL tab, in the Page group, click Symbol Style from the list.
  3. Choose from the style options, (see Symbol Style Dialog Box).
  4. Select OK.
  5. Click on the map to display your symbol.

Any new point objects that you add to your map will use the symbol style that you specified.

Changing the Location of Point Symbols

To drag your symbol to a new location:

  1. Make the layer that you want to work with editable.
  2. On the SPATIAL tab, in the Selection group, click Select, and Select.
  3. Click and drag the symbol to a new location on the map.
