Before you run the parser process, you must create the Customized Definitions word and pattern table. You do this by adding customized word/phrase and category definitions which the parser uses to standardize your data and identify data patterns.

Add definitions using the following BDP tools:

  • Word Definitions Tool . Use to create the business data categories (output attributes) and the word and phrase definitions that tell the BDP how to parse your original business data.
  • Mask Definitions Tool . Use to create mask definitions to help the parser identify data shapes and character patterns, and associate them with your categories.
  • Parser Tuner. Use to create or modify word and phrase definitions in the Customized Definitions table by manually entering entries (or using the Build Entry and Quick Build Wizards) and to define and verify patterns. Categories can only be added in the Word Definitions Tool.

You can further identify your data by adding recodes, synonyms, and classifications. All definitions are written to the Customized Definitions word and pattern table. This table contains context-specific information about words, phrases, and masks and acts as input to the BDP process. No matter which tool you use to create definitions, you can modify and test them in the Parser Tuner.

Note: For information about how the BDP works with patterns, see About BDP Patterns.
