An attribute is a field or column in an entity.

Note: An attribute cannot exist in a repository without an entity.

Depending on the structure of the source data, an attribute is one of the following:

Attribute Type

Data Source

Column

Relational database

Field

Flat file

Field

COBOL application

The repository uniquely identifies each attribute with a reference number (also called object identity number), allowing for attributes with duplicate names to exist.

To view attributes in a particular entity

  1. In the Navigation View, click the Discover bar, then click the Entities tab.
  2. Right-click the entity that contains attributes you want to view, and select Drill down to attributes.

The Entity Member Attributes List View opens.

  3. (Optional) Double-click an attribute row to view corresponding metadata; for example, the reference number (Ref), the number of distinct values in the attribute (Values), and the number of distinct Masks, Metaphones, and Soundexes.
