You use the SUBSTRNG routine to find a string of characters within another string of characters. When you run this routine with the Data Comparison Calculator, you are evaluating two strings (Field 1) to see if they are contained in one or both fields in a second set of strings (Field 2).

The Data Comparison Calculator determines the scores for each comparison and displays the highest score. (Scores are based on the location of the string within the other field.)

To run the SUBSTRNG routine with the Data Comparison Calculator

  1. Select the Compare tab.
  2. Select SUBSTRNG in the Comparison Routines list.
  3. Enter values in the Record 1, Field 1 and Record 2, Field 1 text boxes. (For example, enter rogers for Record 1 and smith for Record 2.)
  4. Enter values in the Record 1, Field 2 and Record 2, Field 2 text boxes. (For example, enter smith for Record 1 and rogers-jackson for Record 2.)
  5. Click the Encoding drop-down list and select the encoding used in the records.
  6. If you are performing a case-sensitive comparison, click the Match Case check box.
  7. Optional: Choose the AND or UC modifier.
  8. Click Compare. The Data Comparison Calculator compares each value in Field 1 to each value in Field 2 and calculates a score for each comparison. In the example used in this procedure, "rogers" from Field 1 is compared to "smith" and "rogers-jackson," then "smith" from Field 1 is compared to "smith" and "rogers-jackson." The value of the highest score appears in the Score field in the Data Comparison Calculator window.
