You use the MXDNAME routine to detect the presence of one name within another name. The MXDNAME routine is similar to the SUBSTRNG routine, but is designed to compare names when the name form values are different. For example, you can search for the personal name "Smith" within the business name "Smith and Sons."

To run the MXDNAME routine with the Data Comparison Calculator

  1. Select the Compare tab.
  2. Select MXDNAME in the Comparison Routines list.
  3. In the Record 1, Field 1 and Record 2, Field 1 text boxes, identify the name form for the record. The options are: 1 (for personal names); 2 (for business names); or 0 (for name rejects).
    Note: Specify a different Field 1 value for each record if you want to compare the data in Field 2 to the data in Field 3. If both values in Field 1 are the same, the MXDNAME routine compares the data in Record 1, Field 2 to Record 2, Field 2.
  4. In the Record 1, Field 2 and Record 2, Field 2 text boxes, enter the names you want to compare to those in Field 3.
  5. In the Record 1, Field 3 and Record 2, Field 3 text boxes, enter the names you want to compare to those in Field 2.
  6. Click the Encoding drop-down list and select the encoding used in the records.
  7. If you are performing a case-sensitive comparison, click the Match Case check box
  8. ClickCompare. The routine looks at both the Field 3 values to see if they contain either of the values in the Field 2 text boxes. The highest score is displayed in the Score field.
