An address consists of multiple layers of information, and these layers vary among countries. Trillium Geolocation uses several address fields to identify the various layers of an address, including:

Premise/Building and SubBuilding
Premise contains the number of the property, such as a house number.
Building contains the name of the property, if there is one. This may or may not be populated.
SubBuilding is used for any kind of building sub-division: apartments, flats, floors, suites, and so on.

Street and SubStreet
Street is the primary street field. It contains the street name the Premise (house number) is associated with.
SubStreet is used in some countries where a second level of street is required for some addresses. In the UK, for example, the name in SubStreet is actually the larger of the two streets, with Street containing the side-street off the larger street. The Premise (house number) always refers to the secondary street (in Street), so this usage is required to format the address correctly. For example:

City and SubCity
The GL City field contains the main city, town or locality name for the address.
Some countries have an extra layer of locality, which may be required for some addresses. The GL SubCity field is used for these. The SubCity contains the smaller sub-division of what is in City.
Many countries use this address format, including the UK, New Zealand and others.
The UK also has a third level of locality for some addresses. This is stored in the GL Cedex field. (See the description of the Cedex field below.)

Region
The GL Region field contains the primary regional sub-division for each country. The actual meaning of this varies. In the UK it is the County, in the US it is the State, in Canada it is the Province, and so on. If the country's address format includes a region, it will be in this field, although it is also used in countries where the output address does NOT include the region.
Some countries have additional levels of regional information. These could be larger sub-divisions, such as the municipality in Portugal and the autonomous community in Spain, for which the GL Principality field is typically used, or smaller sub-divisions, such as the County in the US, the district in Austria, and the canton in Ecuador, for which the GL Cedex field is typically used. The regional divisions in these fields are typically not used for addressing.

Cedex
Trillium Geolocation has a fixed set of address fields. To avoid compatibility issues new fields are typically not added, which means that on occasion existing address fields are re-used when adding new data to existing countries.
The Cedex field was originally added to Trillium Geolocation to hold CEDEX information for French addresses. It has since been re-used for various address components, such as the county in the US, the double-dependent locality in the UK, the prefecture for China, and the municipality (gemeente) in the Netherlands. For example, in the Netherlands the city (GL City) of Hoogeveen lies within the municipality (GL Cedex) of Hoogeveen, which is within the province (GL Region) of Drenthe.

Principality
The Principality field serves different purposes for different countries. In Spain it is used for the “autonomous community” (comunidad autónoma), which is a larger sub-division than the entity found in the GL Region field, which is the province/municipality name. In many cases, the names in multiple fields are the same. For example, in Spain the city (GL City) of Madrid lies within the province (GL Region) of Madrid, which is itself within the autonomous region (GL Principality) of Madrid. For many addresses within Madrid, therefore, these fields all contain the name Madrid.
