To work with your data in the Discovery Center, add a data source that contains (or links to) your data. Add either a profiled or dynamic data source. A profiled data source is a copy of your data loaded into the repository. A dynamic data source acts as a link to your external data source file. Before you add a data source, consider the type of metadata you want to explore and the business rules you want to apply.
Use the Add Data Source window to guide you through the Select, Configure, and Add steps, which include the following tasks:
- Select the data connection and data source file.
- Establish the schema file settings, based on the data source file
- Preview and configure the data structure
- Set the load parameters
- Verify the settings
- Schedule the job to run (profiled data sources only)
- See Guidelines
Note the following when working with data sources:
- Before you begin, ensure the
administrator has:
- Created repositories (one or more) into which you will import the data for profiled data sources and granted you permission to use the repositories. If you are creating a dynamic data source, you need only a connection to the external data source, although you still need to log in to a repository to work with data sources in the Discovery Center.
- Created data connections, one for each type of external data source to which you want to connect, including delimited, RDBMS, and TSQ fixed-length.
- Defined each data connection with file extensions that match your data files.
- Profiled data sources are added to the repository to which you are currently logged in.
- Data sources you create in Discovery Center display on the Entities tab in the Control Center.

Using the Add Data Source Window
The Add Data Source window has three tabs labeled Select, Configure, and Add to guide you through the three-step process. Your work is saved as you continue through the tabs. At any time during the process you can view a summary of your selections and make edits to your saved work. You can work in other areas of the Discovery Center while keeping the Add Data Source window open.
