You must add at least one data connection for each type of external data source to which you plan to connect. Data connections are used by one or multiple repositories and are accessed by Discovery Center users when they add data sources to repositories.

Note the following guidelines:

  • When adding data connections for relational databases, ensure that the relational source files are properly configured before you create data sources.
  • Data connections are enabled by default. You can disable them at any time after they are added. See Enabling and Disabling Data Connections.
  • By default, all repositories on the server will have access to the data connection. During the add process you can restrict access to one or more repositories.
  • Cache size allowed per data connection can be specified as a performance setting in the Repository Manager. This value specifies the maximum memory, in megabytes, to be used when loading data, analyzing attributes, and creating indexes. Define this setting to be as high as your hardware allows (up to 1 GB) without relying on virtual memory.
Note: On multiple CPU systems, the data load process can run multiple times in parallel. In these situations, memory is shared across all processes to ensure that it does not exceed the limit you define.

To add a new data connection to the current repository server

  1. Do one of the following:
    • On the navigation menu, click Data Access > New Data Connection.
    • On the Home page, go to the Add panel. In the Choose a category drop-down list, select New Data Connection, then click the plus icon ().
    • When you open a repository for editing, click New Data Connection.
    • From the Find Data Connection, Search Results page, click New Data Connection.

The New Data Connection window opens.

  2. For Name, enter a name for the data connection. The name does not need to be unique; multiple data connections with the same name are allowed on the same repository server.
Note: You cannot rename the connection after it is added to the repository server.
  3. For Description, enter a brief description.
  4. For Connection Type, click the drop-down list and select the external data source type to be accessed by the connection. Configure the properties as needed based on the type of connection you select:
Note: You cannot change the connection type after the connection is added to the repository server.
  5. For Repositories with Access, do one of the following:
    • Keep the default selection All. This grants all repositories on the current repository server access to the connection.
    • Check Selected to grant or restrict repositories access to the connection. Click Choose Repositories to open the New Data Connection: Repository Access window and add repositories to the access list. (For more information, see Editing Access to Repositories.) The number of repositories with access displays.
  6. Click View/Edit Access List to view or change the list of repositories with access to the connection.
  7. Click Save to add the new connection. (Clicking Cancel closes the window without saving your work.) A confirmation summary displays showing details of the newly added data connection.
  8. Click Edit Settings to open the Edit Data Connection window and make changes to the connection properties. Click Save to save your changes and return to the summary, or Cancel to return to the summary without saving changes.
Note: You cannot edit the connection name, ID, or type.
  9. Do one of the following:
    • Click New Data Connection to continue adding connections.
    • Click Done to close the window.
