To work with your data in the Discovery Center, add a data source that contains (or links to) your data. Add either a profiled or dynamic data source. A profiled data source is a copy of your data loaded into the repository. A dynamic data source acts as a link to your external data source file. Before you add a data source, consider the type of metadata you want to explore and the business rules you want to apply.

Use the Add Data Source window to guide you through the Select, Configure, and Add steps, which include the following tasks:

  • Select the data connection and data source file. For HDFS delimited connections, select an HDFS data file or the HDFS directory that contains the data files. Files created by the MapReduce framework are supported.
  • Establish the schema file settings, based on the data source file
  • Preview and configure the data structure
  • Set the load parameters
  • Verify the settings
  • Schedule the job to run (profiled data sources only)

Using the Add Data Source Window

The Add Data Source window has three tabs labeled Select, Configure, and Add to guide you through the three-step process. Your work is saved as you continue through the tabs. At any time during the process you can view a summary of your selections and make edits to your saved work. You can work in other areas of the Discovery Center while keeping the Add Data Source window open.

To open and use the Add Data Source window

  1. Do one of the following:
    • On the Home page, go to the Add panel. In the Choose a category drop-down list, select New Data Source, then click the plus icon ().
    • In the left navigation menu, select Data Discovery > Add Data Source.
    • Run a data source search. From the search results page, click Add Data Source.

The Add Data Source window opens with the Select tab active.

  2. To change the size of the window:
Drag any corner or side of the window to resize it.
    • Click to expand the window. Click again to return to the original size.
    • Click to collapse the window down to a bar. Click to return to the original size.
  3. Select. Start by selecting the connection and the data source you are loading or linking to.
  4. Configure. Configure the structure of the new data source.
  5. Add. Define your data load parameters, including the type of data source you want to add.
  6. To edit your settings:
    • Click the Select or Configure tab when it shows a green check.
    • Click Summary at any time to see an overview of your saved selections. From the Summary page:
    • Click the edit icon () for the step you want to edit. This closes the Summary and opens the step for editing.
    • Click Back or In Progress to open the last step you worked on.
    Note:

When you return to a tab to edit information, verify the selections on other tabs because they may need to change based on your edits. For example, if you are working on the Add tab and you go back and select a different data file on the Select tab, you may need to change the delimiter and quote settings on the Configure tab.

Clicking Finish adds the data source to the current repository. To close the window at any time without saving your work, click Cancel or the X icon.
