If at any point the Capacity Database does not contain the most recent performance metrics for a given Target, then perform the following checks to understand why data collection/processing has fallen behind.
-
Control Center is Running: The Control Center coordinates and actions the collection, processing and housekeeping of performance data captured by Syncsort™ Capacity Management Acquires (or third party monitoring tools such HP OpenView). The Control Center runs as a Windows Service and can be checked via:
-
System Manager: Start System Manager and open the Capacity Database which is demonstrating the problem. Navigate to the Control Center panel and ensure that all appropriate Control Centers are running. If they are not, simply select the required Control Center and press the Play button. Note, this can be done from any PC which has Syncsort™ Capacity Management System Manager installed.
-
Windows Services: Windows Operating System includes a Services panel (accessible via the Administrative Tools option on the Control Panel) which shows the status of the Windows Services running on the PC or Server. Find the Syncsort™ Capacity Management Control Center service and ensure that it is running. If it is not running, start it.
Note: This approach can only be taken on the machine where the Control Center is installed. -
-
Target is associated with correct Control Center: Having checked that the Control Center is running, check that the Targets that are not up to date are associated with the correct Control Center.
To do this, start System Manager, open the Capacity Database which is demonstrating the problem and navigate to the Target List. The columns that are displayed in the list are user configurable and can contain a column headed Control Center. If this is not visible, right click in the grid header, select Show Column, and pick the Control Center column. If the expected Control Center is not shown, pick the correct Control Center from the drop down combo containing all Control Centers associated with the current Capacity Database.
-
Capture details: For a Target to be able to capture performance data, a number of items need to be correctly set up within System Manager. Refer to the System Manager online help for full details.
-
Capture Enabled: Checkbox that indicates whether Target should be capturing data. Ensure that this is checked for the Target(s) in question.
-
Appropriate Capture Profile Sent: Each Target must have a Capture Profile associated with it, which must be sent to the Target. The Capture/Collection section of the Target Maintenance screen provides details of these, including the profile status and the date/time that the profile was last sent to the Target.
-
-
Collection Details: In order for the Control Center to be able to collect and process the captured data, Collection needs to be configured and enabled:
-
Collection Enabled: Checkbox that indicates whether Control Center should be collecting data from the Target. Ensure that this is checked for the Target(s) in question.
-
Collection profiles: The Collection Profile defines how often data is collected from the Target. Check that a profile is assigned and reflects requirements.
-
If the Connection Method is “PUSH”, ensure that all 3 collection components (push retrieve, collect) are defined in the Collection Profile.
-
-
Connection Details: The Control Center needs to be able to connect to the Target(s) in order to gather the data captured so that it can be processed into the Capacity Database. The Connection Status section on the Target Maintenance screen provides summary information regarding Control Center/Target connectivity.
-
Connection Enabled: Checkbox that indicates whether Control Center can connect to the Target. Ensure that this is checked for the Target(s) in question.
-
Last Connection Made At: This describes the date/time at which the Control Center last successfully connected to the Target. If it falls outside the parameters within the Collection profile then there is a connectivity issue.
-
Data Last Retrieved at: This describes the date/time at which the Control Center successfully pulled some performance data back from the Target. Again, if this is outside the parameters within the capture and collection profiles then there is an issue with capture/collection. Refer to the flowcharts below.
-
Connection Details: If there are problems connecting to the Target, verify that the connection details defined on the Target are correct. Other key things to check include:
-
Network issues - Are there any known network issues that would prevent connectivity?
-
Password - Has the password for the account used as the basis of the connection expired or changed?
-
If the connection method is Push:
-
-
-
Are all targets failing or is failure isolated to specific targets?
-
Is the FTP server up and running?
If, having checked all of the above, the problem persists, and the Capacity Database remains out of date, use the flowcharts below to help determine the source of the problem and identify the additional information that Precisely Support will require to resolve the problem.
