Follow these instructions to create a new Capacity Database in a SQL Server database, using the Syncsort™ Capacity Management Data Management application.
This should be performed on a computer where you have successfully installed the Syncsort Capacity Management Client Applications.
-
From the Start menu, choose Programs: Syncsort Capacity Management: Desktop Front-End to start up the Syncsort Capacity Management front end. Go to the Capture page.Figure 1. Part of the Capture page of the Syncsort Capacity Management desktop front end
-
Click the Data Management icon, to start up the Data Management application.
If this is the first time Data Management (or any other Syncsort Capacity Management application) has been used, it is unlikely that a Capacity Database will be associated with the application.
-
A Data Management dialog will ask you to create a new database.

Click Yes to start the Capacity Database Wizard.
Figure 3. Capacity Database Wizard – Options for the SQL DatabaseAs shown, there are two options. The Wizard can either:
-
Create a new SQL Server database and a Capacity Database within it. The necessary permissions to create a SQL Server database are required at this stage, as explained in the section Windows account requirements of Syncsort™ Capacity Management Installation Guide.
-
Or create a Capacity Database within an existing but empty SQL Server database that has been created by the SQL Server Administrator. Select this option if a SQL database created by the SQL Server Administrator is ready for use by Syncsort™ Capacity Management.
Note: If an SQL database is selected that has any tables in, it will not usable by Syncsort Capacity Management. That is, an empty SQL database must truly be empty.-
Make your choice, and click Next.Figure 4. Capacity Database Wizard – Specifying the SQL Server instance to use
The drop-down list will contain the names of all SQL Server instances that are known to the host computer. (If the drop-down list is not populated, click in the box and use the up and down arrow keys.).
If the backslash and the instance name after the computer name is omitted, Syncsort Capacity Management will connect to the default instance on that computer.
-
-
Type in or choose (local) to use a SQL Server instance on the host computer. The brackets are required. If you need to enter a non-default port-number add a comma and the required number. For example, v-srvr-sql,5333 or sqlfarm1\capplanning,10433
-
Choose the appropriate SQL Server instance, and click Next.Figure 5. Capacity Database Wizard – Specifying a name for the new SQL Server Database
-
Here, specify the name for the new SQL Server Database. Note the rules for a valid SQL Server database name:
-
The first character must be ‘a-z’, ‘A-Z’, ‘@’ ‘_’ or ‘#’
-
Subsequent characters can be ‘$’, ‘0-9’ or any of the above
-
(This means among other things that spaces in a name are not allowed).
-
The maximum length of the name is 123 characters.
-
Type in a valid name for the SQL Server database and click on Next. This name will be the name of the database as known to SQL Server. It will not normally appear in any Syncsort Capacity Management dialogs.
Figure 6. Capacity Database Wizard – Example of name and description for the Capacity DatabaseSQL database name and Capacity Database name
Although it is quite possible to specify different names for the SQL database name (previous step) and the Capacity Database name (this step), it is recommended that the same name should be specified for both. The reason for having the two separate names, is that it allows the possibility of changing the SQL name (for example, as a result of SQL Server administration requirements, name clashes, etc.) while still retaining the Syncsorts Capacity Management name. Changing the Syncsort Capacity Management name would result in access problems for all updateable charts, reports and other related items.
Database naming convention
The same rules apply to the Capacity Database name as to the SQL Server database name (see previous step). The name and description supplied will be used by Syncsort Capacity Management to identify the Capacity Database in all the relevant dialogs, such as opening a Capacity Database to obtain data about a target system. Effectively, this will become an internal name for the SQL Server database.

Type in a relevant name and description for the new Capacity Database (to replace the defaults), and click Next.Figure 7. Capacity Database Wizard – Summary of selections
-
Click Finish.
The new SQL database will be created, containing the Capacity Database. Initially the database will be empty except for some administrative data.
-
Click OK on the “successful” dialog.
The new database will appear in the Data Management window, like this:
