Assuming you have either the Standard or Enterprise editions of SQL Server, you will have access to the SQL Server Enterprise Manager applications. This permits the user to define housekeeping activity for SQL Server, including the backup of a database on a regular basis.

The simplest action is to perform a daily backup of the entire Capacity Database, which will result in a single Windows file being created that could be used to recover the database if necessary.

Another activity that may benefit performance longer term is to perform a “shrink” on the database to remove excess space and reorganize indexes to be more efficient. You can also schedule this from the Enterprise Manager. A weekly or monthly run of a shrink should keep your Capacity Database in good working order.

If you use software such as NetBackup from Veritas or any other proprietary data security software, you should consult that product’s documentation to help you set up the backup regime you require.

Your SQL Server Administrator will be able to advise on how these backups should be created and managed. If you use SQL Server Management Studio, backups can be managed by means of a Maintenance Plan. A Maintenance Plan can create backups, perform database shrinks, and carry out other necessary tasks under control of a schedule. If you are processing data from many Syncsort™Capacity Management targets, we recommend that your Capacity Database should be backed up daily.
