Deletion of a target – as opposed to the target’s data – is performed by Control Center, and this is where problems can occur.

In Data Management, you can right-click on a target name and choose Delete. If you do this (and answer Yes to “Are you sure…?”), you are offered the following options:

  • Click Yes to delete the target and all its data

  • Click No to delete the data only, and keep the target.

If you choose Yes, a cascaded delete is started which causes Syncsort™ Capacity Management to walk through the data structures removing data, finally removing the target definition when all data has been deleted. Although a single thread in Control Center performs this activity, it still results in a very large amount of locking of key Capacity Database tables while the activity progresses. The more data there is to be deleted, the longer these tables are locked, and the more chance that other Control Center threads will be unable to complete their activity and may time out.

Note: When you set a target to be deleted using Data Management, the Control Center service must be running. This is because the request for the deletion is saved to the Capacity Database, and is picked up by Control Center which actually performs the removal of the target details and any associated data.
