The UNIX System Administrator needs to perform these tasks while logged on as root.

  • Create a user name for Acquire – We normally use the name metron, but the choice of name is entirely up to you. For the rest of this section, the name metron is assumed. You can select a user name that is already in existence, but be aware that the installation of Acquire will remove any existing crontab and replace it entirely with its own tasks. You can edit back in your cron tasks but be aware that re-sending a Capture Profile will result in only the Acquire tasks remaining in the crontab.

  • Ensure that user metron can log in – Once installation is complete the log-in capability may be removed if site security demands.
Note: The Control Center requires ongoing access to the UNIX system, using FTP, SFTP or file sharing (e.g., NFS or Samba).
  • Check that the metron user’s login shell is either the Korn shell (ksh) or the Bourne shell (sh), but not the C shell (csh). – For Linux, the shell should be the Bourne Again shell (bash). Problems can occur if other shells are used e.g., tcsh in Linux.

  • Ensure that the user metron has the ability to schedule cron jobs – by issuing the following command:

    crontab -l

This can mean ensuring that the metron user name is entered into the file cron.allow, wherever this may be located according to the specific variant of UNIX.

If you are told that your user is not allowed to use this program (crontab), this may mean that the metron user name has been entered into the file /var/spool/cron.deny.

  • Ensure that the user metron has the language variable set to “C” if NLS is applicable.– Normally, UNIX produces files from the standard monitors in formats appropriate to each country. Setting the variable to “C” causes the output files to contain data in a standard (UK) format as required by Syncsort Capacity Management.
