The Target Number Map File, sysinumMap.txt, is created automatically by Control Center. It holds a list of names and target numbers of all the Windows targets that are defined as being in push mode. Acquire looks up its computer name in the list to find its target number.

Because Windows computers may have more than one name, Acquire searches the names in the list in the following way.

  • Acquire first searches the list for the DNS name obtained from gethostname.

  • If the first search fails, and the DNS name from gethostname was fully qualified (e.g., myserver.Precisely.co.uk) then Acquire repeats the search using only the unqualified part of the name (e.g., myserver).

  • If no match is found, Acquire searches using the NetBIOS name obtained from GetComputerName.

Note that all matches are case insensitive, e.g., myserver matches MyServer.

This means (among other things) that if a particular computer is returning an unqualified DNS name from gethostname, then Acquire will never be able to match a fully qualified name in the mapping file.

Only use fully qualified names in the mapping file if:

  • You are sure you need them for disambiguation, and…

  • Your servers are correctly configured to return a fully qualified name.

The computer name that appears in the mapping file for each target is the Target Server Name as defined on the Connection Details panel for that target in System Manager.
