Mall: A named cluster of stores – enclosed or open-air – having one or more anchor stores and surrounded by parking areas. Malls typically have entertainment (theaters, arcades) and eating establishments, and are day destinations.
Outlet Center: A collection of outlet (factory) stores and discount stores with parking areas. Store layout varies. A shopping location’s name will typically make it clear that it focuses on discount shopping, typically including “discount,” “factory,” or “outlet” in the name.
Shopping Center: A row or concentration of retail stores (box stores and/or local businesses). Parking is typically in front of the stores. People tend to come to shopping centers to do errands – they are not day destinations.
Shopping District: Open-air, walkable area with a high concentration of retail stores, services (such as beauty salons), and restaurants. People typically walk from establishment to establishment instead of driving. Shopping districts are frequently located in downtown urban areas.
