Taxonomies and hierarchies are a special type of code set. They are hierarchical code sets. They consist of a node tree. The codes are nodes and they can have descendent codes. For a detailed description of hierarchies and taxonomies, see Taxonomies and Hierarchies
There are two types of hierarchies:
- Hierarchy: A non-restricted hierarchy is typically called simply a hierarchy. A hierarchy cannot have dynamic attributes.
- Restricted hierarchy: A restricted hierarchy is similar to a taxonomy. A control attribute in the repository is used to store a record's hierarchy node assignment, so a record can only be assigned to one node in the hierarchy. However, the record can be assigned to nodes in multiple restricted hierarchies. Each restricted hierarchy's node assignment is stored in its own control attribute. Restricted hierarchies cannot have category attributes but they can have dynamic attributes.
Some aspects of managing hierarchies can be performed in the New UI. All management tasks of taxonomies and hierarchies can be performed in the Classic UI.
Hierarchy management in the Classic UI consists of:
- View a Repository's Taxonomy and Hierarchies in the Classic UI
- Create a Hierarchy
- Create or Edit a Hierarchical Code Set
- Create or Edit Hierarchical Code Set Codes with the Detail Editor
- Create a Properties Repository for Code Sets, Taxonomies, and Hierarchies
- Create a Hierarchy Catalog Repository
- Create or Edit a Category or Dynamic Attribute Association Object
- Register a Hierarchy
- Create a Taxonomy or Hierarchy Control Attribute
- Manage Category or Dynamic Attributes from a Repository View
- Copy a Hierarchy
- Add a Hierarchy Node or Change its Metadata
- Delete a Taxonomy or Hierarchy
- Export a Taxonomy's or Hierarchy's Codes
- Import a Taxonomy's or Hierarchy's Codes
