This tool is used to create a new polygon layer with the features of either one of the original layers. The new layer does not include areas where both layers overlapped.

The Difference tool can be selected by navigating the following path:

  • Tools > Vector Processing > Spatial Analysis > Difference

The first section requires you to select required data layers and the parameters to run the Difference tool.

  1. Select a Polygon Layer - Reference layer from which the output is produced.
  2. Clipping Polygon Layer - Overlapping layer with which reference layer is overlapped.
  3. Difference Type - You can choose from the following types of difference:
    • Difference - Overlapping part of the reference layer is cut off.
    • Symmetrical Difference - Non-overlapping part of both polygon layers is merged as a single polygon.

The second section requires you to select the range of data for the operation to be implemented. There are three options available:

  1. Select By Data Queries
  2. Select By Graphics
  3. All Data

For more information about these options and how to implement them, see Data Selection Methods.

The output is represented as a highlighted polygon based on the type of difference selected.

You can view the output after storing it. To save the output, you must enter the Output Layer Name and click on Save Data button. The saved output will be added as a new layer in the current map session, where you can apply styling as required. This output layer will also be available in 'My Data' section and can be used in any map session of interest.
