This is a useful tool for sharing maps with others who are not on your system, for backing up a workspace that may have many distributed table locations into one directory, or for sharing a partial map with others who may have more current information.
The Workspace Packager tool can:
- Collect the files of a list of workspaces into a single location and create new workspace files to reference the copied tables
- Collect a workspace's table information (references) into one new file for easy access by others who share your network access and permissions
- Copy all of the tables in a workspace to a specified folder or network location and create a new workspace file to share these tables. Users who do not share your network access or permissions can access this workspace easily
- Create a new workspace file from selected table references of an existing workspace for easy access by others who share your network access and permissions
- Create a new workspace file from copies of selected tables from an existing workspace and save it to a location from which others who do not share your network access or permissions can access it
These options ensure that the map you are trying to share with others will open properly under different access and permission circumstances. Further, using this tool, your workspace users will be able to open your packaged workspace no matter where the files are moved to or copied to, even if the files are moved or copied to a different computer.
For each of the Workspace Packager options, you can select one of these entries:
- Select Make native copy (Save Copy As) to make a copy of the tables in the workspace and save them to a particular folder or network location. We recommend this option when you want to send your map to someone who does not have access to the folders or network locations where these .TAB files are kept. You might also want to use this option if you are not sure whether the person to whom you are sending this map has access to the data. Workspace files created this way are larger than the Keep Original version would be.
- Select Keep Original (do not copy) to maintain the original table location references in a new workspace. We recommend this option when you want to send your map to someone who has access to the same folders and network locations. Using this options saves space.
Keep these definitions in mind as you use the Workspace Packager tool.
For information about how to add a tool to the Tool Manager, see Working with MapInfo Pro Tools.
Using the Workspace Packager to Save Tables to One Location
Use these instructions to save the tables associated with a workspace to one location and create a new workspace that accesses these copied files. This process allows you to share a workspace with others who may not have your network access or permissions.

- Run the Workspace Packager tool to display the Workspace Packager window. See Running a Tool for details.
- Use the Browse button to identify the folder to which you want to save the packaged workspace files. We recommend that you change the file name of the workspace file at the end of the field to something meaningful to you.
The options in the next step allow you to specify the handling of tables based on their location
- To copy all of the tables of a .wor file to one directory, choose Make native copy (Save Copy As) for each of these enabled options.
