This dialog box allows you, (depending on your task) to:

  • Choose a table to save to.
  • Choose a table to import into.
  • Create a new table.

To specify a default projection, on the PRO tab, click Options, and Map Window. This projection is used when a dialog box displays prompting you to enter a projection.

Note: You can encounter data corruption, due to truncation or conversion, when saving a copy of a database table between Unicode and non-Unicode character sets. When saving non-UTF-8 (non-Unicode) to UTF-8 (Unicode), there is the potential for data truncation. When saving UTF-8 or UTF-16 (Unicode) to a non-Unicode, there is the potential for conversion issues. For details, see Saving a Copy of Your Table to a Different Character Set.

Save in:

Choose the drive, folder, and, file for saving, importing, or creating the table.

Up One Level button

Displays the directory one level up form the current directory.

View Desktop button

Displays your desktop.

Create New Folder button

Displays a new folder with a temporary name.

List button

Displays a list of files and folders without details such as file size etc.

Details button

Displays a list of files and folders with details including name, size, type, and modified.

DBMS Connection Mode

The following controls only display if a DBMS connection has been established.

Owner

Displays the owner list for the selected connection. Disabled if the connection does not support owners (Access, Excel, etc.). Only tables belonging to the selected user are shown in the table list. Each time you switch connections MapInfo Pro, the default owner is selected. If no default owner exists, then the first item in the list is selected.

Filter Tables

Displays the Filter Tables dialog box where the user can choose to filter system tables, views, synonyms/alias or regular tables. The default filtering excludes only system tables. Changes made to the filtering persist through out the session. The default is not reset; even if you select another connection or exit, then reenter the Open dialog box.

New Connection button

This button is located in the top right corner of the Open/Save dialog box. Pressing this button displays the Open DBMS Connection dialog box. The button is always available if DBMS support is on (for example either of the DBMS dlls are present).

If a new connection is opened, then it will be selected in the Files Of Type drop-down list when you return to the Open/Save dialog box. You can open a connection prior to invoking the Open/Save dialog box on the HOME tab, in the File group, on the Open list, by clicking Database Table. You van also specify a DBMS connection that will be opened each time MapInfo Pro starts using the Startup Preferences Dialog Box.

Description Box

This shows the folders and files in the selected location. You can also double-click a folder or file in that box to open it.

Places Bar

The four buttons on the Places Bar are associated with the following directory preferences: Tables, Remote Tables, Import Files, and Workspaces. Pressing one of these buttons switches the current directory of the dialog box to the directory associated with the button.

By default, MapInfo Places Bar is always displayed, even on 98/NT40, where there is no standard Places Bar. On systems that support a standard Places Bar, a set of option buttons, labeled MapInfo Places and Standard Places, allows you to toggle between the two.

File name

Displays the name of the file with a .TAB extension. You can change the file name. MapInfo Pro supports long filenames. This allows you to use up to 260 characters when naming your file. In addition, any one name within your directory path can be up to 255 characters. You can insert spaces in the filename and long filenames can have more than one "." in them. When using more than one ".", you must remember to type in the file extension in order to save the file correctly. For example you can name a table as follows: \\STATE\CITY.TAB

Save as type

A list of DBMS connections will appear if a connection has been established. When you select a collection from the list, the dialog box goes into DBMS Connection Mode, (see above), and DBMS specific controls display.

If creating a new table, there are several formats to choose from, such as MapInfo (*.tab), MapInfo Extended (*.tab), dBase (.dbf), Microsoft Access database (.tab), SQLite database (.tab). When saving to dBase, the data file is saved to both DBF and MapInfo format. If you want only a DBF file, use the Export command (on the TABLE tab, in the Content group, click Export).

If importing into a table, you can choose either MapInfo (*.tab) or MapInfo Extended (*.tab) format. When importing a file that has more than 2GB of data, select MapInfo Extended (*.tab). This format expands record and field lengths along with the number of fields per table, so that you can work with more data without using seamless tables.

Note: When importing files, you cannot select a character set for MapInfo (*.tab) and MapInfo Extended (*.tab) file formats. MapInfo Pro uses the local system character set when creating MapInfo and MapInfo Extended tables. When importing GML files, you can specify a character set within the file itself, but MapInfo Pro does not use it. Instead, the resulting MapInfo or MapInfo Extended table uses the system character set. When importing MIF/MID files, the resulting MapInfo or MapInfo Extended table use the character set from the file header. If "Charset" is not in the file header, then the system character set is used. If the file header has a UTF byte order mark at the start of the file, then the UTF character set is used instead.

Database

Displays when in DBMS Connection Mode. Located at the bottom of the dialog box, this text control displays the name of the database corresponding to the selected connection.

Open new table using view

  • Automatic - MapInfo Pro chooses the most appropriate view. If the data is mappable (for example, graphic objects are attached to the data), for example, MapInfo Pro opens the table in a Map window. If you have a Map window displayed and the table you want to open is mappable, MapInfo Pro will automatically open the table in the current Map window. If the data is not mappable, MapInfo Pro will attempt to open the table in a Browser window. If the table cannot be mapped or browsed, MapInfo Pro opens the table using the No View option (no data is displayed).
  • Browser - MapInfo Pro attempts to open the table in a Browser window.
  • Current Mapper - MapInfo Pro attempts to add your data to the current Map window.
  • New Mapper - MapInfo Pro attempts to open the table in a new Map window.
  • No View - MapInfo Pro opens the table making the data available for other uses, but no data is displayed.
Note: When you open a table and select an option in the Preferred View drop-down list, MapInfo Pro remembers what you selected and uses the same option the next time you open a table.
