To display this dialog box, right–click on a legend frame and select Modify Legend Frame Properties.

When working with raster legend frames, you can make colors on the raster transparent by changing their alpha value to zero (0) in the Labels list. To hide or show a color in the legend, select or clear its check box for in the Labels list.
  • Continuous raster legend frames do not support Line Sample, Auto Increase Sample Size to Match Font, and Number of Columns options, so they do not display for these legend frames. These frames use the Sample Sizes and Color Bar Orientation settings.
  • Classified raster legend frames use the Sample Sizes setting.

Legend Frame

Title

Title of the frame. Enter a title for the legend frame.

Set Font for Title (Aa)

Select to open the Text Style Dialog Box. You can choose font, font size, and color effects (including halo and bold effects).

Subtitle (Aa)

Subtitle of the frame. Enter a subtitle for the legend frame.

Set Font for Subtitle (Aa)

Select to open the Text Style Dialog Box. You can choose font, font size, and color effects (including halo and bold effects).

Restore Default Title and Labels

This option is only available for thematic frames, not for raster or map frames. Clicking this button resets the title, subtitle, and labels to their default state. For Pie, Bars, Dot Density, Graduated Symbol, and Grid theme legends, this selects all of the legend labels in the Labels list to make them visible in the legend. This does not affect label selections for Ranges or Individual Value theme legends, so any unselected labels in the Labels list remain unselected.

Sample Sizes:

Not all of the following options display depending on type of legend.

Region Sample Width

Enter a value for the width of a swatch in the map frame of the Legend Designer window. You can specify 8 to 144 points, 0.666667 to 12 picas, 0.111111 to 2 inches, 0.282222 to 5.08 millimeters, or 0.282222 to 5.08 centimeters. If not specified, then the default value of 32 points is used. (This can be set as a preference, see Legend Window Preferences Dialog Box).

Region Sample Height

Enter a value for the height of a swatch in the map frame of the Legend Designer window. You can specify 8 to 144 points, 0.666667 to 12 picas, 0.111111 to 2 inches, 0.282222 to 5.08 millimeters, or 0.282222 to 5.08 centimeters. If not specified, then the default value of 14 points is used. (This can be set as a preference, see Legend Window Preferences Dialog Box).

Paper Units

Specifies the units when you measure the size of objects in a Legend Designer window. Choose a unit of measurement from the drop–down list. The default unit is points (pt), because it more accurately matches sample sizes to font sizes for legend text.

  • 1 inch (in) = 2.54 centimeters , 254 millimeters, 6 picas, 72 points
  • 1 point (pt) = 0.01389 inches, 0.03528 centimeters, 0.35278 millimeters, 0.08333 picas
  • 1pica = 0.16667 inches, 0.42333 centimeters, 4.23333 millimeters, 12 points
  • 1 centimeter (cm) = 0.39370 inches, 10 millimeters, 2.36220 picas, 28.34646 points
  • 1 millimeter (mm) = 0.1 centimeters, 0.03937 inches, 0.23622 picas, 2.83465 points

(This can be set as a preference, see Legend Window Preferences Dialog Box).

Line Sample

Enter a value for the width of a line segment in the map frame of a Legend Designer window. You can specify 12 to 144 points, 1 to 12 picas, 0.666667 to 2 inches, 4.23333 to 50.8 millimeters, or 4.23333 to 50.8 centimeters. If not specified, then the default value of 36 points is used. (This can be set as a preference, see Legend Window Preferences Dialog Box).

Auto Increase Sample Size to Match Font

Select to enable resizing the legend swatches (samples) based on the font size setting.

Sample Sizes: for Continuous Raster Legend Frames

A different set of options display for a Continuous raster frame, which set the Thickness and Length of the sample sizes on the color bar.

Color Bar Thickness

See description for Region Sample Width above.

Color Bar Height

See description for Region Sample Height above.

Color Bar Orientation

Specify Vertical or Horizontal orientation for the color bar.

Number of Columns

Select the number of columns to use for the legend list. Selecting multiple columns creates a wider legend.

The number of columns automatically updates when you change row visibility. If the number of rows visible is less than the current number of columns, the number of columns reverts to the number of visible rows. If this occurs, the number does not increase when you add more visible rows. Clicking Move Selection Up and Move Selection Down does not increase the number of columns above the number of visible rows, or decrease it less than one (1).

Border Style

This option only displays when modifying maps that were generated before version 11.5. Check to place a border around the selected Legend Frame. If you want to change the pen style for the border, click the box displaying the X (the Style button) to open the Line Style dialog box.

Labels

Aa

Click Font Picker to open the Text Style dialog box and change the font for all labels in the map frame.

Click Sort Labels in Ascending Order to change the sort order of the legend rows. For thematic legends, an ascending sort means the rows display in a top to bottom manner that makes sense for the particular theme type; for example, a Ranged theme frame that displays the rows from lowest to the highest range. For a Pie or Bar theme, an ascending sort means the categories are listed in the order selected by you. For an Individual Value legend, the label sort order is based on the original order of the items when the theme was created. This also means that changing a text label for Individual Value themes does not affect the sort order.

Click Sort Labels in Descending Order to change the sort order of the legend rows For thematic legends, a descending sort means the rows are displayed in a bottom to top manner that makes sense for the particular theme type. For an Individual Value legend, the label sort order is based on the order of the items when the theme was initially created; for example, an Individual Value legend theme would display rows alphabetized from Z to A. However, changing a text label for Individual Value themes does not affect the original sort order. For Graduated Symbol legend, a descending sort means the values are listed from largest to smallest.

Click Clear all Label Ordering to return to the default sort order. This button displays for map legends and not all thematic legends. Map legends have a default sort order, which Clear Sort restores.

Click Move Selection Up to reorder one or more labels that you have selected in the Labels list.

After moving labels, ensure that the items you want to display in the Legend Designer window are selected in the Labels list. Unchecked items will not display in the Legend Designer window.

Click Move Selection Down to reorder one or more labels that you have selected in the Labels list.

After moving labels, ensure that the items you want to display in the Legend Designer window are selected in the Labels list. Unchecked items will not display in the Legend Designer window.

Click Toggle Display of Record Count to show a record count beside each label in a map legend. This button is hidden when the layer does not support record counts. Record counts only display for:
  • Ranged, Graduated, and Individual value themes. Other thematic types do not support record count.
  • Classified rasters that have rows with a record count. Other raster types do not support record count.

Map legends do not support record count.

For raster or grid data, the type of data determines which buttons are visible and it determines the ascending and descending sorting order.

Labels List

Shows a list of the labels in the frame. Labels with a check mark beside them are visible in the Legend Designer window. To edit label text, double click on it and then enter new text, or select the label and use the Edit selected text here text box. The label text will wrap, if necessary, to display within the visible text region.

Edit selected text here

For more lengthy edits, such as for longer text strings, click on text in the Labels list and then make your edits in the Edit selected text here text box. If multiple labels are selected, they are all changed.

Longer text will wrap, if necessary, to display within the available text box display area.

Multi–line text is shown if the legend label is multi–line. To insert a line break, click in the text box to position the cursor, and then click Enter. You can create multi–line text labels for Map legends but not for Thematic legends.

Number of Objects

This is a read–only text field that shows the number of objects for a label row when the record count is turned on (and the legend frame supports record count).
