A graduated symbols map shows data points with specific numerical values. It is useful for illustrating quantitative information, such as high-to-low rankings of point data. The size of the symbols is proportional to the data values of the points. Points that have larger data values appear larger, and points that have smaller data values appear smaller.
To create a thematic map using graduated symbols:
- Click on a Map window containing the layer you wish to create the theme for.
- On the MAP tab, in the Content group, click Add Theme to open the Create Thematic Map - Step 1 of 3 wizard panel.
- Click Graduated and select from the list.
- Click Next. The Create Thematic Map - Step 2 of 3 wizard panel opens.
- Choose the table on which you want to base the shading, and choose the field from where you want to obtain the data values.
- Click Next. The Create Thematic Map - Step 3 of 3 wizard panel opens. Use this dialog box to customize the map or its legend.
- Click OK.
A graduated symbols map is created based on either the default settings or customized settings you entered.
Customizing a Graduated Symbols Map
Customize your Graduated Symbols thematic map using the Settings and/or Legend button. To go back to any of the earlier wizard panel to make changes, click Back. You can customize two areas on a graduated symbols map:
- Settings
- Map Legend
Customizing the Styles in a Graduated Symbols Map
The Customize Graduated Symbol dialog box enables you to customize the settings for your graduated symbols map. The settings include the type of symbol that displays, its size and color attributes, and the data value on which to base the size of the symbol you choose. Additional options allow you to choose the symbol scale, the symbol's orientation, and a symbol for negative values.
To customize a graduated symbols map:
- Click on a Map window containing the layer you wish to create the theme for.
- On the MAP tab, in the Content group, click Add Theme to open the Create Thematic Map - Step 1 of 3 wizard panel.
- Click Graduated and select a template from the list.
- Click Next. The Create Thematic Map - Step 2 of 3 wizard panel opens.
- Choose the table on which you want to base the shading, and choose the field from where you want to obtain the data values.
- Click Next. The Create Thematic Map - Step 3 of 3 wizard panel opens.
- Click Settings to display the Customize Graduated Symbols dialog box.
- Choose the items you want to customize and make the desired changes.
- Click Options for additional customizing features.
- Click OK to save your changes.
Customizing the Legend of a Graduated Symbols Map
MapInfo Pro creates a legend automatically when you create a thematic map. Keep the default settings or customize your legend to suit your needs. Click Legend in the Customize section of the Create Thematic Map - Step 3 of 3 wizard panel to customize your map legend's fonts, titles, and more (see Customizing a Thematic Map Legend).
