The Merge grid tool allows multiple grids (overlapping or non-overlapping) to be combined into a single output grid. Merging grids takes information from each grid and recalculates the value at the grid node to create a new grid. Only numeric grids can be merged.

To merge grids:

  1. On the RASTER tab, in the Operations group, click Raster Operations and then click Merge to open the Merge dialog box.
  2. Select the Create MVR check-box to create the output in the Virtual Raster format. It is generated quickly and occupies negligible space.
  3. Select the Batch Mode check-box to process multiple inputs with the same set of input parameters in a single go.
  4. Select the source raster from the Input File drop-down list for the merge operation. The primary grid will have a yellow star next to it. It will be treated as a reference raster.
  5. Select the merge region from the Merge Region drop-down list. There are three options:
    • Union - The input grids will be merged according to the math union operation.
    • User Rectangle - The input grids will be merged within the rectangle region you will define. Type the rectangle bounds in the Min X, Min Y, Max X, and Max Y fields. Alternatively, you can draw a rectangle on the open map, select the drawn rectangle and click inside a field. The bounds are automatically updated.
    • Map Extent - The input grids will be merged according to the map extent defined. Type the map extent coordinates in the Min X, Min Y, Max X, and Max Y fields.
  6. Select the merge operator from the Merge Operators drop-down list.

  7. Select the Add Vertical Offset check-box if you want to add offset values to the input grid cell values.
  8. Select the resample method from the Resample Method drop-down list.

  9. Select the Multi Resolution Output check-box to enable the Multi Resolution Mode.

  10. In the Output File box, enter a name for your output file. Click to browse and select the location in your computer to save the output file.
    1. Click Output Settings to specify the following. The output settings can be controlled by the values set in the Raster Preferences, however, you can overwrite those settings before executing the operation.
      • Display Output File - Select the check-box, if you want to open the output file in the Map window on completion of the operation. You can configure to make this the default behavior from the Raster Preferences dialog.
      • Compression Settings - If the file format to be saved is an MRR or TIFF, the compression settings options will appear. You can choose one from Data Balanced, Data Speed, Data Space or Advanced options as required.
      • Compression - Select a compression method and level. For more information, see Compression methods.
      • Encoding Type - Select a suitable Encoding Type for the data from the list. This drop-down list lets you select the default Encoding Type when saving a raster to MRR format. It enables you to compress the data when saving a raster to MRR format. Encoding Type is enabled only when the raster field type is Continuous and the compression method is lossless such as ZIP, LZMA or LZ4. The drop-down list contains the following:
        • None - No encoding.
        • Previous Column Linear - Linear estimation of the value from previous two columns.
        • Previous Column Value - Predicts the value from previous column.
  11. Click Process to start merging the input raster datasets based on your selected merge type, operator, and resample method.
