Heatmaps are used to visualize distributions of point data and to show locations where a higher density of activity occurs.
Heatmaps help you quickly identify areas where a higher concentration of events occur – for example a higher than average number of criminal events or traffic accidents.
How to access the Heatmap tool
- On the Map tab, in the Content group, click Heatmap , to open the Heatmap dialog box. This dialog provides predefined styles for the Heatmap.
- On the RASTER tab, in the Interpolate group,
click the Create Raster
button to open the gallery. Select a method from
Heatmap category. Note: The various interpolation methods are grouped into logical categories. There are categories for Heatmap, Assignment, and Interpolation. Each category has multiple methods under them. When you select any method from a category, the dialog box title displays the category name instead of selected method name.
- Right-click on the Layer Control window, and click Heatmap.
Output File
In the Output File box enter the name you want to specify for your output file. Click to browse to the location in your computer to save the .MRR file.
Standard
Use this style for smooth Heatmap with medium resolution and detail.
Detailed
Use this style for smooth Heatmap with high resolution and detail.
Smooth
Use this style for smooth Heatmap with low resolution and detail.
Optimal
Use this style for smooth Heatmap with high resolution, detail, and broad coverage. Optimal produces the best image because it combines high resolution with total coverage.
Search Radius
Use the slider to increase or decrease the search radius.
The search radius controls the resolution of the Heatmap. Use a smaller radius, along with a small cell size, to reveal higher detail and higher resolution. Use a large search radius to generate a smoother Heatmap. The search radius also impacts the processing time of the calculation. Use a smaller search radius to reduce the processing time.
