To open a raster file using the MapInfo Pro Advanced application:
- On the RASTER tab, in the File group, from the Open list, click Open Table. The Open dialog box displays.
- Change the filter for Files of type to Raster Image.
- Select the Raster file you wish to open and click OK. You may be warned that an existing Table definition exists. Click OK to overwrite it.
The raster will now be loaded into the Map window. If a raster image is georeferenced it will be automatically opened. If a raster image has an associated world file, you will be prompted to choose the projection. If you open a raster image that does not have any georeferencing data, you will be prompted to display or register the image.
A raster files can be read from various file types, and must contain numeric XY location coordinates as well as numeric Z values. The Z values contain the variables to be plotted on the map, such as elevation, rainfall, population or other similar types of values.
When you open a raster file for the first time in MapInfo Pro Advanced, some associated files such as, .ghx, .pprc, .perc, .TAB are created in the same folder where input file resides.
- <SOMEFILE>.ghx - This file contains color, underview and hillshade information. It stores a user's settings like display mode, color table, whether hill shade is enabled or disabled.
- <SOMEFILE>.pprc/perc - .pprc and .perc files are overview files. They store overview information for the raster. If raster is ASCII then .perc file is created, for other raster formats .pprc file is created. MRR (Multi-Resolution Raster) created through MapInfo Pro Advanced generally have overviews inside them, therefore they don’t have a .pprc file.
- <SOMEFILE>.TAB - This file describes the structure of your table. It is a small text file describing the format of the file containing your data.
