The user defined color transformation option in the Color dialog box allows you to define breaks in absolute, percent and percentile terms. It enables you to define your own breaks between the minimum and maximum cell values and set color that are appropriate for displaying your data. Alternatively, you can start with one of the pre-defined classifications and make adjustments as needed. For example, you can choose from Percentile Break (5), Percentile Break (10) and Percentile Break (N) for displaying your data.

You can interpolate smooth color gradients between these user-defined color breaks.
  1. On the PRO tab, click Options, and Preferences under MapInfo Pro Raster to open the Raster Preferences dialog box.
  2. From the Display tab, select the Interpolate check-box to enable smooth interpolation of color gradients between user-defined color breaks.

Percentile

In user-defined percentile break, the values are divided on a relative basis, rather than in absolute terms. The percentile break splits data into 100 equal parts and a value is measured against other data in the group. Each percentile represents the proportion of data that lie above or below this value. For example, 60% of data lies below the 60th percentile, 95% of data lies below the 95th percentile, etc.

In this example, the input raster contains a total of 1024 cells.

If we define breaks in percentile with 2 intervals, the break table for percentile is calculated as shown below.

In this case, the values under Break Table represent the range of cell values (0 to 50), and the count is the number of cells falling in that category. On a scale of 100, the percentile (50%) represents the percent of distribution of green and red color. Each percentile represents the proportion of data with respect to other data in the group.

If we increase the number of intervals to 4, the value range (in this case, 0 to 1024) is divided into 4 equal parts and the break table for percentile is calculated as shown below.

In this case, the values under Break Table represent the range of cell values (for example, 0 to 25), and the count is the number of cells falling in that category which is 25% in terms of percentile.

For your convenience, MapInfo Pro Advanced allows you to use following pre-defined percentile breaks for displaying your data.

  • Percentile Break (5)
  • Percentile Break (10)
  • Percentile Break (N), where 'N' represents the specified number.

The percentile break transform is well suited for linearly distributed data, as it assigns the same number of data values to each group.

Percent

If you select Percent for the User Defined transform, you can create equally spaced breaks in the cell value range. For example, Percent Breaks (5) will create five equally spaced rows - 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100. For example, for a percent break of 2, you will see the break tables as shown below:

For example, for a percent break of 4, you will see the break tables as shown below:

For your convenience, MapInfo Pro Advanced allows you to use some pre-defined percent breaks. You can adjust these pre-defined breaks as needed for displaying your data.
