The demographics_index.txt file, which contains the PBKEY to Census Block Group code lookup, has been refreshed to be compatible with the MLD version 2023.10.
Important: Be aware that the lookup file has been updated on a quarterly
basis, whereas the GroundView demographics data including the geoenrichment demographic
attributes are updated annually.
Data set changes in the 2023 annual update and other notable changes are listed below:
- Two themed datasets have been discontinued, as alerted in the 2022 release of
GroundView Complete:
- Five-year projections of Consumer Spend Potential datasets were retired after the 2022 release. Current year estimates of Consumer Spend Potential datasets will continue to be released on an annual basis.
- The Retail Sales Potential dataset was retired after the release of GroundView: Complete 2022.
- Consumer Spend Potential (CSP) variables for CY have been updated with the categories and data that align with the latest Consumer Expenditure Survey from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. The CSP variable names continue to follow a simplified sequential naming system, as introduced in GroundView: Complete 2022. You should be aware that the descriptions of field names may differ between releases, due to the sequential nature of the field naming. Changes in field names would occur when changes to the survey occur. For 2023, no changes have been made to the CSP fields, other than slight modifications to several of the CSP field descriptions. As previously noted, the 5-year CSP projections have been removed from the product.
- Two themed Demographic datasets Family and Housing characteristics data within
GroundView: Complete 2023 release have been modified. The following bold field names
and/or field descriptions have been changed to align more closely with the variable
descriptions provided by the Census Bureau (DHC and ACS input data), for these
themed datasets. The changes affect the Base Year and Current Year Demographic data
files.

These field names have been changed in this release. They now have a ge_ prefix as intended. In other words, for the 2023 release, the mislabeled field names in the GeoEnrichment data files (those fields that were missing the ge_ prefix) have now been corrected. For example, himedcy and hiavgcy in the GeoEnrichment data set have been renamed ge_himedcy, ge_hiavgcy, respectively. The Demographic data sets still retain the same field names, for example, himedcy and hiavgcy. The data schema workbook and the load scripts have been changed accordingly.
- As mentioned earlier in this document, the 2022 vintage of TIGER/Line boundaries includes the new county-equivalent planning regions in Connecticut. This has resulted in geographic codes for Block Group (BG), Census Tract (CT), County (CO), and Minor Civil Divisions (MCD) being modified for Connecticut, from the original Census 2020 geographic codes, and now in alignment with Census Bureau’s 2022 TIGER/Line geographic codes.
- Significant data source input changes and methodological changes have been introduced this year in the household development stage of the GroundView current year household build process. Refer to the GroundView: Complete Product Guide. Due to these changes, users are urged to use caution if making year-over-year comparisons. In general, census year (base year) to current year average annual change is a more suitable comparative measure.
