This data pack consolidates multiple definitions of French Cantons, with boundaries precisely aligned to the corresponding Franciemes Communes. It now includes congressional district boundaries as well as polling station boundaries, offering a more comprehensive and integrated dataset for various electoral and geographic analyses. Following layer definitions are available:
  1. Cantonaux zoning: Given the availability of several differing definitions of Cantons across France, this dataset specifically defines the following Cantons to ensure clarity:
    • Cantons_Electoraux: Contour layer of 2054 Electoral Townships defined during the 2015 electoral reform (Cantons "Valls"). The delineation of each canton is explained in the Journal Officiel de la République Française (JORF).
Note: There are no electoral cantons in Martinique, Guyana, the Overseas Territories (TOM), central Paris, or the Greater Lyon metropolitan area. Therefore, this layer does not represent a complete division of France.
    • France_CV: Contour layer of 2074 INSEE townships (also called pseudo township) in France, including 5 DOMs but excluding the TOMs. City cantons are defined based on the basic unit of the commune and form a type of sectorization. Therefore, they are not divided within major cities. For details, refer to Pseudo-canton.
Note: City cantons follow the definition of the INSEE's geographic affiliation table for communes (Geographical Official Code).
    • France_Cantons_InfraC (Precisely): This is the canton layer used by the Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAA) for dividing France into micro economic territory. This division specifically includes the boundaries of the cantonal districts within the largest urban areas. The layer includes 3,828 sub-communal cantons and forms a sectorization of metropolitan France.
Note: There are no contours in DOMs and TOMs.
  2. Other Electoral District Zoning:
    • Circonscriptions_Electorales: These are the contours of the 588 electoral districts for the 2022 parliamentary elections outside the specific French overseas congressional districts. The layer is aligned with the administrative layers of Francieme, including departments, communes, and IRIS, ensuring perfect consistency with the Official Geographic Code (COG). Population data are calculated by aggregating the populations of the IRIS for each congressional district (using the most recent census year from INSEE).
    • BureauxVote: This layer includes the polygon boundaries of the 68,759 polling stations referenced in 2024 during the most recent European elections. This directory associates each address in France with its corresponding polling station identifier. It thus enables the calculation of a new raw cartographic layer called Polling Station Contour Proposal through geocoding and an initial set of cartographic work. The population attached to each polling station is calculated by aggregating Base Immeubles Precisely (population at the address point).
