The Lineage Diagram shows how your data moves and transforms between systems and is selected by default when the asset being inspected is a Technical Asset. The Impact Diagram allows you to easily evaluate the impact that any change may have on related assets and is selected by default when the asset being inspected is a Business Asset.

To open the Diagrams page, navigate to the detail page of an asset and click the Diagrams tab.

The Diagrams page provides a graphical representation of a selected asset in the context of its relationships. The diagram displays all relationships, including technical relationships between applications. You can select an asset to view its details, search for an asset by name, or apply filters to control the assets that are displayed in the diagram. By assigning colors and icons to different asset types, you can easily trace the flow of data from source to target, and see how it is used and transformed along its journey.

Impact and Lineage diagrams are built automatically when you create relationships between assets.

1) Diagram type

The Lineage Diagram shows how your data moves and transforms between systems.

The Impact Diagram allows you to easily evaluate the impact that any change may have on related assets.

The Process Diagram models the business processes of your organization with their corresponding data governance associations.

Any filters that you save will be associated with the selected diagram type.

2) Assets

The colored boxes represent assets or responsibilities. Technical users may refer to these boxes as "nodes". Within each box, assets are listed under the asset type name. On lineage diagrams, diagram assets are listed under the asset that contains the process diagram. On impact diagrams, diagram assets are not listed directly, but the asset that contains the process diagram is listed under the asset type name.

The lines linking items represent relationships. Technical users may refer to these relationships as "edges".

In an Impact diagram, the arrowhead of the line that links predicates, for example, points from parent to child. Similarly, other arrowheads always show the correct direct of flow.

To investigate an asset in more detail, right-click the asset in a diagram. Three options are displayed:
  • Open - Displays the relevant diagram for the asset.

  • Open in New Tab - Displays the relevant diagram for the asset in a new tab.

  • Show Details - Displays the details of the asset in a new panel.

Only the Show Details option is available if you do not have read access to the selected asset, or when the selected asset item is the current asset.

Note: If any parent in a Lineage Diagram has more than 10 children, they will be collapsed and a count is displayed to the right of the relevant parent container. The same is true in an Impact Diagram, if an asset type parent has more than 10 children. Click the plus sign (+) next to the parent to expand the list.

3) Search

Type a search term to search for an asset within the diagram.

The search is case insensitive and will only locate assets that start with the typed text.

All levels of the asset hierarchy are included in the search and all matching items are highlighted. You can use the previous and next arrows to cycle through the search results.

4) Toolbar buttons

Button Description

Add Relationships - Displays the Add Relationships modal dialog, where you can create new relationships, provided you have selected an asset on the canvas and have the appropriate permissions. You can also right click on an asset on the canvas then select the Add Relationships option in the drop-down menu.

When you return to the Impact or Lineage diagram after adding a new relationship, it you will see that it has been updated with the newly added relationships.

Note: Although it is possible to create lineage relationships through the user interface, if you are adding a large number of new relationships, it is generally recommended that you use Bulk loading to create business asset relationships, or Connectors to create business to technical relationships, as this approach will generally be quicker and more accurate than manually adding individual relationships through the user interface.
Refresh Diagram - Click to refresh the visualization and return the diagram to the default view.
Download as PNG - Download an image file showing the current view. This can be a useful, for example, as a way to share a quick snapshot of a diagram with a colleague.

Information Panel - Select an item in the diagram, then click the Information Panel button to view its details and ownership information. To navigate directly to the definition page of a selected asset, click the link at the top of the panel.

Tip: You can also open the information panel by right-clicking an item in the diagram and selecting Show Details.

Filters Panel - Displays a new panel, where you can apply filters to control which assets are displayed in the diagram:

  • Select a predefined filter - Save your filter settings for reuse.

To create a new predefined filter, click the menu button and select Add. Type a name for the filter and click Create.

Your selections for the following settings will be saved: Asset Ancestry, # Hops To Load, Display by Asset Type, Hide by Impact Predicate and Hide by Responsible Party.

To use a predefined filter, select it from the predefined filter menu. If you make any changes to the filter settings, click the menu button and select Save. Or, to delete the predefined filter, click the menu button and select Remove.

Tip: Saved filters will be associated with the selected diagram type, either the Lineage Diagram or the Impact Diagram.
  • Asset Ancestry - Asset hierarchy is displayed by default. Parent-child relationships are illustrated by nested boxes. You can choose Show direct parent/owner to remove this hierarchy detail from the diagram, see Assigning asset colors and icons.

  • # Hops To Load - Specify the number of hops to display. The hop count refers to the number of intermediate technical assets through which data must pass between source and target. Hop count is a rough measure of distance between two technical assets.

  • Display Descendant Assets - By default, diagrams do not show descendants of assets or nodes. Choose from:

None - The default option. The diagram only displays the item being inspected.

Direct children only - The diagram only displays the immediate child nodes.

All descendants - The diagram displays all nodes that are descended from the asset in focus. Siblings are not displayed. All descendants includes those that do not have lineage relationships associated with them.

Note: A message is displayed, if more than 500 nodes are included: "Sorry, we cannot display an asset with more than 500 descendants."

The setting is persistent on a per user and asset type basis.

  • Hide by Asset Type - Select specific assets, or asset types, to remove from the diagram.
  • Hide by Impact Predicate - Show/hide assets according to predicate type.
  • Hide by Responsible Party - Control which responsibility types are displayed in the diagram. By default, all responsibility types are displayed.
Tip: You can also filter your diagram by right-clicking a selected item and choosing Hide, Hide Upstream (subjects) or Hide Downstream (objects).

Alerts - If the diagram contains items that have open actions, the Alerts icon is red and a count of open actions is displayed to the right of the icon. Items with open actions are displayed in red within the diagram.

Click the red Alerts icon to display details of the open actions. From the Alerts panel, you can choose from:

  • Show Details - View details of the item with an open action.
  • Open in New Tab - Open the detail page of the asset with an open action in a new browser tab.

The alert count only includes assets that are visible in the diagram. If you click an impact badge to expand the diagram, the alert count will increase if more items with open actions are revealed.

Settings Panel - Displays a new panel, where you can choose from:

  • All Badges - Show/hide all impact and ownership badges.
  • Ancestor Badges and Lineage - Show/hide parent asset impact and ownership badges, and parent asset lineage.
  • Icons - Show/hide asset icons.
  • Scores - Show/hide scores.

Expand View / Shrink View - Expand the diagram to full screen, or reduce its size to return to the default view.

5) Impact and ownership counts

When you open the Diagrams page, relationships with BusinessToTechnical or Transformation predicate types are expanded by default.

If an item has additional relationships, this is indicated by a gray impact badge showing the type of relationship and a count of the related items. Click an impact badge to expand the diagram to show additional relationships.

If an item has assigned owners, this is indicated by an orange ownership badge showing the responsibility type and a count of the individuals with the specified responsibility. Click an ownership badge to show a list of users with the assigned responsibility.

6) Zoom

Use the Zoom in and Zoom out buttons to adjust your view of the diagram. You can also click and drag the canvas background to pan your view.

Tip: If you notice any relationships are missing, ask an administrator to click the Rebuild Asset Graph button on the Administration > Settings page.
