It is useful to think of asset types as categories of glossary terms. For example, you may have a top-level asset type for Vendors, but then further organize Vendors into Software, License Services and Professional Services. It is the responsibility of the system administrator to define and maintain a set of Business Asset types. Data stewards and business owners can then create, develop and maintain assets within these types, to build an accurate, high quality glossary of commonly understood and agreed upon terms.

  1. Go to Configuration > Business Assets.
  2. Click the Add button.
The Add Asset Type dialog displays.
  3. Enter a Name for the asset type. The value that you enter in the Name field is the value that users will see when they select Business Assets from the left navigation.
If you edit the name or delete the default Name field, you must also update the Display Format field.
  4. Optionally, enter a Description. You can define the description behavior by using the Show Description on List Page and Description Button Name settings, as described in the next step.
  5. Configure the additional settings as needed.
    • Use As Transformation - Select True to enable assets of this type to be used as a connecting asset to form lineage relationships.
Note: If this option is enabled on an asset type, and that asset type is used in a lineage relationship, you cannot then disable Use As Transformation until all relationships that use this asset type as a transformation have been removed.
    • Show Description on List Page - If you have entered a description for the asset type, select True if you want to display the description on the asset type list page.
    • Description Button Name - If Show Description on List Page is set to True, specify a name for the button that will be displayed on the asset type page. Clicking the button name will show or hide the description.
    • Default Read Access - Select True to enable users who do not have any responsibilities assigned to see this asset type by default. When False, non-admin users without any responsibilities will not see or have access to this asset type.
    • Collapsed by default - The description button name will always be displayed on the asset type page when the description is enabled. By default, only the button name will be visible and users can display the description by clicking the button name. Clear the Collapsed by default check box to show the asset type description by default.
    • Auto Display Owner/Parent? - If the asset type has a Predicate to Parent of "child type of", this setting allows you to control the display of the Owner/Parent column on the asset list page. By default, this setting is enabled and the Owner/Parent column will be displayed for the selected asset type. If the selected asset type has an Asset Path type field, you can disable this setting to remove the redundant information that would also be shown as part of the asset path.
    • Edit Parent? - Select to enable the parent to be edited on the asset definition page. This option is only available on child asset types, and is selected by default. If selected and you have edit permissions, you can edit the parent of a child asset accordingly.
Note: The parent can always be updated and edited using APIs or bulk load.
    • Background Color - Specify the color of the box used to represent the asset type in diagrams.
    • Icon - Optionally select an icon to represent this asset type. You can scroll through the list of available options, or type to search for an icon by name. If defined, this icon will be displayed on asset detail pages, on the Search Results page and on the Diagrams page. If you do not define a custom icon, the default icon for this asset type will be used.
  6. Click Add Asset Type.
Select the asset type that you have just created. On the Fields tab, click the Add button to define fields for the asset type.

Manage permissions on asset types via Responsibility Type Assignment.

View and create relationship types associated with the selected asset type from the Relationship Types tab.
