It is useful to think of asset types as categories of glossary terms. For example, you may have a top-level asset type for Vendors, but then further organize Vendors into Software, License Services and Professional Services. It is the responsibility of the system administrator to define and maintain a set of Business Asset types. Data stewards and business owners can then create, develop and maintain assets within these types, to build an accurate, high quality glossary of commonly understood and agreed upon terms.

When a data steward or business owner creates a new Business Asset, they must first choose an asset type. The asset type determines:

  • The category of the asset, for example, Business Term, Objective or Report.
  • The fields which must be populated for the asset.
  • The relationships that can be created.
  • The responsibilities assigned by default to the asset.
  • The workflows that are initiated upon certain actions, such as creation or modification.

To view a list of existing Business Asset types, select Configuration > Business Assets.

You can filter the list of Business Asset types by typing the first few characters of an existing asset type in the search bar.
