You can create a set of reference lists that have a hierarchical relationship, where the option that you select in list A determines the options that are available to select in list B.

For example, at the top level of the hierarchy, list A contains a list of countries. List B contains a list of regions and is a child of list A. List C contains a list of towns and is a child of list B:

Reference List A - Country

e.g. USA

Reference List B - Region

e.g. Illinois

Reference List C - Town

e.g. Naperville

Configure cascading reference lists

  1. Create a reference list for each level of the hierarchy, for example, Reference List A - 'Country', Reference List B - 'Region' and Reference List C - 'Town'.
  2. Configure the hierarchy by setting the Predicate To Parent and Parent fields on the child reference lists (Region and Town). For example, list B (Region) is a child type of list A (Country):
    • Name - Region
    • Predicate To Parent - child type of
    • Parent - Country
    • Description - A list of regions, filtered according to the selected country.
  3. Once you have created the Reference Lists, you can add them to an asset type by referencing them from a List type field.
    1. Create a new asset type, or edit an existing asset type, and add List fields that use the reference lists.
    2. For the child reference lists (Region and Town), select the parent list in the Parent List field. For example, for the 'Region' reference list, select the List field type, then select Reference List Item: Region in the Type of List field. Finally, select Country in the Parent List field.
  4. Configure an asset which has hierarchical list fields:
    1. Select a Country, for example 'USA'.
    2. Select a Region, for example 'Illinois'. The values that are available to select from the 'Region' field are filtered according to the value that is selected in the 'Country' field, in this case 'USA'. For example, you would see Alabama, Illinois, Massachusetts, and so on, but you would not see regions of the UK, such as Cheshire and Merseyside.
    3. Select a Town. The values that are available to select from the Town field depend on the value that is selected in the Region field. For example, if you selected 'Illinois' in the Region field, you would be able to choose from Chicago, Rockford, Naperville and Schaumburg.
Note: The values in a hierarchical list are only displayed once you have selected an item in the parent list. For example, you will not be able to select a Region until you have first selected a Country.
