The data classification of an asset gives the confidentiality level of the associated information. For example, public, proprietary or secret.

The default categories are defined in a data classification reference list, which by default includes:

  • Unclassified
  • Sensitive
  • Public
  • Confidential
  • Proprietary
  • Sensitive
  • Secret
  • Top Secret

Each category level is assigned a color and can also be given an optional description and profile level.

The appropriate category level is displayed in a badge on the relevant asset page, immediately to the right of the asset name. The badge caption is the same as the category level, while its color is the one defined in the reference list. If a description has been defined, it is displayed as a tooltip, when you hover over the badge.

If you have the appropriate permissions, you can add further categories to the list, or adjust colors as required.

Define the data classification

  1. From the navigation bar, select Configuration, then select the appropriate asset type.
  2. Select the relevant asset and on the Fields tab, click the Add Field button.
  3. Enter a Name, for example, Data Classification.

Note: Ensure that dataClassification is entered as the API Name, with that exact spelling.
  4. Select the List field type, then click Define Field.

  5. Under List Configuration, select Reference List Item: Data Classification.

Note: If the field type is not a reference list, the badge does not display next to the asset name.
  6. In the Default Value field, select the appropriate category. For example, Sensitive.

  7. Click Add Field.

The dialog closes, the field is added to the list and the relevant badge displays on the asset page.

Tip: If you use the Data360 AnalyzeDatabase Connector, the "Database Profiler Add-On" allows you to determine which technical asset tables or columns should be profiled, and to what extent. For example, "only profile counts on this table with sensitive information" or "give me all profiling information available for this column".
