You can add text boxes to annotate your data flow to provide other users with a greater understanding of the tasks that are being performed. You can assign different colors to the text boxes to help visually organize the canvas.

Note: It is not possible to create or edit boxes with Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is no longer a supported browser from version 3.6.0.

For example, the following image shows the CoffeeShop tutorial data flow that is shipped with the product:

Standard data flow

The image below shows the same data flow organized and annotated with text boxes:

Inserting a text box

There are two ways to add a new text box to the canvas:

  • Click the Add a text box button on the toolbar.
  • Alternatively, right click the canvas background and select Insert > Text Box.

Moving a text box

When you add a box to the canvas, the edit panel is displayed. A box cannot be moved when it is in edit mode.

  1. Click the canvas background to ensure that the box that you want to move is not in edit mode.
  2. Click and hold the left mouse button within the box, and drag to the required location.
  3. When you are happy with the location of the box, right-click within the box and select Lock. This will fix the location and size of the box and prevent you from accidentally moving or resizing it when you are selecting nodes or panning the canvas to view your data flow.
  4. To change the position of a box, right-click within the box and select Unlock.

Resizing a text box

  1. Click within the box to select it.
  2. Move your cursor to one of the corners of the box. The cursor will change shape.
  3. Click and drag to resize the box.

Editing a text box

  1. Click within the box to select it.
  2. Right-click and choose from the following options:
    • Edit - Add and edit text using a set of standard formatting options:

    • Cut - Cut the text box to paste elsewhere on the canvas.
    • Copy - Copy the text box.
    • Delete - Delete the text box.
    • Reorder - Change the order of the selected box, relative to other boxes. Choose from: Send to Back, Send Backwards, Bring Forwards, Bring to Front.

Note: Text boxes are always displayed below all nodes and connections on the canvas.
    • Color - Select a background color for the text box.
    • Lock / Unlock - Fix / change the size and position of the text box.

Deleting a text box

  1. Click within the box to select it.
  2. Right-click and select Delete.
