Near Real-Time data capture is accomplished on most platforms using the transaction log, maintained by the database manager for the purpose of database recovery. Historically, these logs have also been the source of data for other purposes including audit or replication. Generally it is necessary and possible to configure the database manager to include additional information in the log for use by these non-recovery related activities.
IMS is essentially no different in this respect from other database managers, however in the case of IMS, Connect CDC SQData offers two different capture methods, both supporting Near Real-Time data capture. The IMS Log Reader capture processes the IMS recovery logs (OLDS/SLDS) while the TM Exit Capture runs as part of the IMS task itself and performs a synchronous write directly to a System LogStream. It is also possible to utilize both Capture methods at the same time to support business, technical, performance or third party vendor compatibility requirements.
