The Assure UI portal supports integrating notifications about events that occur in portal-managed instances into your SNMP management application. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an Internet standard for remote monitoring and management of hosts, routers, and other nodes and devices on a network.

The Assure UI portal includes software that allows it to act as an SNMP agent that sends notifications (traps) to the SNMP management application on behalf of product instances for which appropriate SNMP support is available. The Assure UI portal and portal applications that support SNMP notifications provide MIB files on the Assure UI server when the Assure UI server is installed or upgraded.

The Assure UI portal does not support querying or controlling the Assure UI portal or product instances from SNMP management applications.

Setting up SNMP support consists of these activities:

Portal applications that provide SNMP support

The following versions of portal applications support SNMP:

  • Assure MIMIX portal application, versions 8.1.11.00 and higher

Loading MIB files into your SNMP management application

When the Assure UI portal and portal applications that support SNMP notifications are installed or upgraded, they provide MIB files on the Assure UI server. As part of the initial SNMP setup, you must make the MIB files made available to your SNMP management application in its expected location.

If a portal application adds a new subscription event in a subsequent service pack, after installing that service pack you will need to load the MIB file for the portal application.

Do the following:

  1. Locate the MIB files for the Assure UI portal and portal applications on the Assure UI server. Table 4 identifies the location of MIB files on the supported Assure UI server platforms.

  2. Load the MIB files into the location required by the SNMP management application. Depending on the type of application you are using, this process might include compiling each MIB file. Refer to your SNMP management application documentation for additional information.

Table 4. Location of the Assure UI portal and portal application MIB files on the Assure UI server

    Assure UI Server Platform

    MIB Location

    IBM i

    /visionsolutions/http/vsisvr/httpsvr/mibs

    Windows

    c:\Program Files (x86)\VisionSolutions\http\vsisvr\httpsvr\mibs

The MIB files are at the same installed version of the Assure UI server or the portal application to which they are associated. MIB filenames are:

  • Assure Unified Interface - VSP-MIB.txt

  • Assure MIMIX portal application - MIMIX-MIB.txt

Configuring SNMP policies

After the MIB files have been loaded to the appropriate location, SNMP policies need to be configured within the Assure UI portal by the Assure UI administrator. Policies only need to be configured once during initial setup of SNMP support.

Before configuring SNMP policies, check with your SNMP network administrator to determine the SNMP version to use and any details needed for that version, such as the user ID for authentication, authentication details such as authentication level, protocol, and password, and privacy protocol and password. The Assure UI portal will not be able to send SNMP notifications (traps) if this configuration information is not correct.

Do the following:

  1. Log in using the Assure UI server administrator user ID (vspadmin).

  2. Select the Administration page.

  3. In the Policies portlet, select the SNMP tab, then click Change.

  4. Identify the SNMP management application by specifying its host name or IP address and port for receiving notifications (traps) in the Destination host IP address and Port fields.

  5. Select the appropriate SNMP version.

When version 3 is selected, you must provide values for authentication-related fields in the following steps.

  6. Specify the User that the SNMP management application uses for authentication.

  7. Select a value for Authentication level. The value you select determines whether you need to do any or all of the following:

    • If the level selected includes authentication, select the appropriate value for Authentication protocol and specify the password used by the SNMP management application to generate the key used for authenticating that protocol.

    • If the level selected includes privacy, select the appropriate value for Privacy protocol and specify the password used by the SNMP management application to generate the key used for authenticating that protocol.

  8. Click Send Test Notification to verify that a notification (trap) can be sent to the SNMP management application. This sends a test notification to the location specified destination and port fields.

The OID of the Send Test Notification trap is: .1.3.6.1.4.1.47240.1.0.1

  9. Click OK.

Now that the initial set up is complete, subscriptions which specify SNMP as an event action can be created for any instance of a product whose portal application supports SNMP.
