In most environments, the most likely causes indicated in Table 23 are problems with journaling. Problems associated with journal state or journal cache are only reported in data groups which are configured to use those high availability journal performance enhancements.

Entries on hold for other reasons: If the data group name is highlighted in yellow, do the following to check for entries that are on hold for reasons other than errors:

  1. From the Work with Data Groups display, use option 8 (Display status).

  2. From the Data Group Status display, press F8 (Database).

  3. Check the value of the Held for other reasons field in the upper right corner of the display. If the value is greater than zero (0), continue with the next step.

  4. Press F11 three (3) times to access the File and Tracking Entry Status display. This view separates the counts of entries held for other reasons by entry type.

  5. Do the following to resolve each type of entry that has objects held for other reasons:

    1. Press F12 to return to the Work with Data Groups display.

    2. Use options 17 (File entries), 50 (IFS trk entries), and 52 (Obj trk entries) as needed to access the held entries.

    3. Investigate the reason why the entry is held and take appropriate action to resolve the problem.

For additional information about possible actions, see the tables in the following topics:

Journaling problems: If the data group name is highlighted in red or yellow, either the objects are not being journaled, or they are being journaled to a different journal than the configured journal.

Do the following to check for and resolve journaling problems:

  1. From the Work with Data Groups display, use option 8 (Display status).
  2. From the Data Group Status display, press F8 (Database).

  3. Check the following:

    1. The Jrn State and Cache Src and Tgt fields. These fields are located in the upper left corner of the Data Group Database Status display. For each system (Src or Tgt) status of the journal state is shown first, followed by the status of the journal cache. The example below shows ‘v’ for value in all for status positions. If any of these fields are highlighted, there is a problem. Use Resolving a problem with journal cache or journal state.

    2. The Not journaled Src and Tgt fields. These fields are located in the upper right corner of the Data Group Database Status display. For each system (Src or Tgt) value, if there is a number other than zero, there is a problem. Either the objects are not being journaled, or they are being journaled to a different journal than the configured journal. Continue with these steps to determine the cause of the problem.

  4. Press F11 (View) multiple times to switch the view until the display shows a list of the objects with journaling problems. Note which objects have problems.

  5. Press F12 (Cancel) multiple times to return to the Work with Data Groups display.

  6. Access the journaled view to check the journaling status for objects with problems:

    • For files, use option 17 (File entries) for the data group. Then press F10 (journaled view) to see journaling status.

    • For IFS tracking entries, use option 50 (IFS tracking entries) for the data group. Then press F10 (journaled view) to see journaling status.

    • For object tracking entries, use option 52 (object tracking entries) for the data group. Then press F10 (journaled view) to see journaling status.

  7. From the journaled view, locate the entries with a journal status (JRN1STS or JRN2STS) value of *NO or *DIFFJRN.
    1. If the journal status value is *NO, continue with these steps.

    2. If the journal status value is *DIFFJRN, further investigation is needed to determine the reason for journaling to a journal that is different than the configured journal. This may require input from your system administrator. Use Resolving a problem for a journal status of *DIFFJRN.

  8. Press F12 to return to the Work with Data Groups display.

  9. Type a 9 (Start journaling). The appropriate Start Journaling display appears. Do one of the following:

    • To start journaling using the command defaults, press Enter.

    • To modify command defaults, press F4 (Prompt). Specify the values you want and then press Enter to start journaling with those values.

  10. Press F5 (Refresh) to update and view the current journaling status.
